  23. Who was John? Norweigan artist 20thcentery El Greco c. 1600

  24. To whom was he writing?

  26. 1 John 1:1-2 NLT 1 We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. 2 This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.

  27. In the beginning the Word [Logos] already existed.    The Word was with God,    and the Word was God.2 He existed in the beginning with God.3 God created everything through him,    and nothing was created except through him.4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,    and his life brought light to everyone.5 The light shines in the darkness,    and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:1-14 NLT

  28. Why did John write the letter? 1:3-4 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. 2:1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. 5:13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

  29. 1 John 1:3 NEB “What we have seen and heard we declared to you, so that you and we together may share in a common life (koinonia), that life which we share with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.”

  30. What prompted the letter? 1 John 2:18: “You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the last hour has come. 19 These people left our churches, but they never really belonged with us; otherwise they would have stayed with us. When they left, it proved that they did not belong with us.”

  31. What were the false teachers teaching? Three heresies (false teachings) • “If we claim we have fellowship with Him while walking in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1:5) • “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves” (1:8) • “If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar and his truth is not in us.” (1:10).

  32. How can we know we have eternal life?

  33. How can we know we have eternal life? Three tests • The test of obedience. “And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments.” (2:3 NLT) • The test of love. “If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.” (3:14 NLT) • The test of correct belief about Christ. “Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? … No one who denies the Son has the Father.” (2:22-23 NLT) “I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (2 John 7 NIV)

  34. How can this letter make a difference in our lives? Fully share in the joy of koinonia (shared life) with one another and with God. Live in victory over sin. Have confidence that we have eternal life. 1:3-4 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us.
