  1. About University Police • UAPD is comprised of 79 authorized sworn positions and 17 support positions. All police officers are certified by the State of Alabama and have full arrest powers. • Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. • On Campus and Fringe Patrols

  2. About University Police • UAPD is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc or CALEA, one of only 9 police agencies in the State and one of 69 college or university police agencies in the nation that are accredited.

About University Police • UAPD works with other local police and fire agencies: Tuscaloosa Police Department Tuscaloosa Fire Department Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Northport Police Department • UAPD maintains close working relationships with other departments on campus such as:Women’s Resource CenterOffice of Student ConductStudent Government Associationand many others.

  4. About University Police • During the 2013–2014 school year, our police department has provided over 282 programs to over 27,306 members of the community.

  5. The Three E’s • The safety of each member of the UA community involves an emphasis on “Three Es”. . . • Education • Environment • Enforcement

Education • The C.O.P.’s or Community Oriented Policing division is a group of officers that work in the residence halls with the students providing education and support to student s in the various residential communities. • UAPD educates students with programs conducted throughout the semester by the C.O.P. Division. EducationThings to think about: • Never leave property unattended. • Keep vehicles and rooms locked. • Don’t allow others to follow you into residence halls without using the appropriate controlled access point. • Keep track of items that stay with them e.g., phones, wallets or purses, backpacks, keys, and action cards.

  8. EducationThings to think about: • Operation ID provided by the UA Police Department and COP program. • Bicycle registration is available through Parking Services. • Use a sturdy lock for bicycles.

The GUARDIAN Programfor cell phones • Students can notify UAPD at the touch of a button; • Can set a safety timer that notifies people you trust to check in on you if you are alone or in an unfamiliar place; • Invite familyand friends to be your “guardian” and communicate with them within the app as needed; • Students can submit eyewitness tips including photos to UAPD; • If Guardian has permission to access the location of the device, your guardians can see your location; • Works with smart phones only; • Sign up at mybama.ua.edu; select the GUARDIAN link.
