  1. The Reality of Lap Dancing Brought to you by

  2. What is Lap Dancing? The common definition of lap dancing is: ‘An erotic dance that a stripper performs whilst straddling a customer’s lap’

  3. What is Lap Dancing? The general population has been led to believe that the lap dancing industry is • glamorous, • that the girls earn hundreds of pounds a night • and that it is a form of ‘empowerment’ for women.

  4. What is Lap Dancing? Lap dancing is portrayed as simply being ‘a bit of fun’. We are led to believe that the girls who work as lap dancers are treated like celebrities who are in control of their bodies at all times. Is this the reality of lap dancing?

  5. The Reality of Lap Dancing The girls who work as lap dancers are not employed by the clubs that they work in. They are classed as being ‘self employed’ contractors who pay the club owners a fee to dance in their club. This is called a ‘house fee’ and can range from £20 - £80 per night.

  6. The Reality of Lap Dancing The girls who work as lap dancers have NO employment rights or benefits. They are not entitled to paid holidays or statutory sick pay. As they are paid ‘cash in hand’ many do not pay income tax or make any NI contributions.

  7. The Reality of Lap Dancing Lap dancing clubs frequently fine girls who break various rules of the clubs. Examples of this include being fined £10 for not wearing enough make-up or the right ‘stripper’ shoes. After paying the house fee and various fines, many girls finish their shifts with no money to take home whatsoever as club owners also take a percentage cut of all earnings.

  8. The Reality of Lap Dancing The women who work as lap dancers are exploited, not only by the men who pay them to strip, but also by the club owners. Club owners charge girls a house fee just for turning up to work. They are then subject to being fined for breaking house rules. On top of this club owners also take a ‘cut’ of everything a girl earns during the night. The more a girl earns, the more she owes the club.

  9. The Reality of Lap Dancing ‘Dancers in clubs are often exploited due to their lack of employment status. The clubs insist on them being self-employed despite the fact that they have obligations like any other employee including the provision of services, set working hours and financial penalties for not working.’ - Shah Qureshi, Bindman’s Law Firm, representing former lap dancer Nadine Quashie in an employment tribunal against Stringfellow’s.

  10. How do Lap Dancers feel? It is extremely rare for lap dancing to live up to its glamorous hype. A large proportion of lap dancers perform under the influence of drink and/or drugs in order to dull the degradation of having to take their clothes off for money.
