  5. Arthur Miller • 1915 -- 2005 • Family comfortable until the Great Depression • Worked at a warehouse to make money for college • Won several awards for his plays in college

  6. Arthur Miller • First Broadway hit was All My Sons • He won a Pulitizer Prizefor Death of a Salesman • He wrote Death of a Salesman in sixweeks • Rise to fame occurs during a difficult time in American history • 1940s to 1950s congress looking for communist

  7. Arthur Miller • Miller was forced to testify before congress • He refused to name names and charged with contempt of congress • He was also black listed for a time • He compared his experience to the Salem Witch trails of 1692 and wrote The Crucible

  8. Arthur Miller • Was married three times • First to his college sweetheart from 1940 to 1956, Mary Slatthery – two kids • Second wife was movie star and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe – while married to her he didn’t write much 1956 to 1961 • Third wife was photographer Inge Morath, 1962 to 2002

Joseph McCarthy • 1940s to 1950 America is concerned with the growth of communism in Eastern Europe and China • McCarthy (1908-1957) takes advantage of this concern soon after being elected to the senate in 1946 • He claimed that more than 200 card carrying communist had infiltrated the U.S. government

  10. Joseph McCarthy • McCarthy’s accusations heightened the 1938 House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) which was an anti-Communist organ • Few people stood up to McCarthy and the anti-Communist machine • Over 300 artist were blacklisted and for many it ended their careers
