HOMEWORK • Several times throughout this PowerPoint you will see the highlighted word HOMEWORK • It is important that you address the information labeled HOMEWORK during/after your enrollment appointment or on the first day of school • HOMEWORK is time sensitive material and will lay a strong foundation for your transition to HHIHS

Staying Informed • Hilton Head Island HS website: http://hhihs.beaufortschools.net/ • The PTSO (parent-teacher-student-organization) is a group that connects student/teacher needs with resources in the community. • The group sends weekly emails to help keep families informed on the abundance of information and happenings at school. HOMEWORK: Parents! Signup for the PTSO emails by emailing: HHIHSPTSO@gmail.com

Graduation Requirements • 24 credits in four years of high school 4 Math Credits 1 Computer Science 4 English Credits 1 Physical Education ORNJROTC+Health 1 US History 1 Biology 1 Other Social Studies 2 Other Lab Science ½ US Government and ½ Economics 1 Foreign Language OR Career & Technical Course 7 Electives (can include additional core classes) • 6 credits must be earned to be promoted from 9th to 10th Grade • 1 Math, 1 English and 4 Others • The Commission on Higher Education requires additional high school credits for college-bound students

Class Scheduling 9th Grade Academy 10th – 12th Grades 10th – 12th grade students are scheduled by semester Called “4x4” Schedule 4 classes in the fall and 4 brand new classes in the spring Classes meet everyday ILT (Independent Learning Time) is a 50 minute working lunch • 9th grade students have their own wing of the building and their own teacher cohort • Core classes are scheduled on a year-long schedule • Classes meet everyday • Electives are scheduled by semester (1 each semester) • ILT is a 30 minute working lunch

Independent Learning Time • Our lunch time is called “ILT” • ILT is a lunch block with extra time added so students can handle all types of business • If ever there is a problem with your grades, the first question a teacher, counselor, or administrator will ask is: “How do you use your ILT time?” • Examples of how you can use ILT: • Go to the cafeteria • Join or start a club – 95% of our clubs meet during ILT • Get tutoring/extra help • Make-up tests and quizzes • Work on homework • Go to the Media Center and work on research/projects • Meet with your Counselor • Pay for student fees • Meet with Attendance • Talk to your coach • Go shopping at the School Store

School Counseling Office • Students are assigned by last name to 1 of 4 Academic and Career Counselors • Counselors are available to see students everyday during ILT to avoid missing class time • Last names beginning with: • A – E are assigned to Ms. Salo • F – K are assigned to Mrs. Videla • L - Q are assigned to Mrs. Diamond • R - Z are assigned to Ms. McRae • School Counselors base student needs on the results of their annual IGP (individual graduation plan) meeting. Parents will be notified of the meeting and it is important that they attend • HOMEWORK: Write down your School Counselor’s phone number and email address when you meet with them today

First Day Info Online Registration Lockers Students should see their Assistant Principal before school or during lunch to get a locker Assistant Principal Skirtich or AP Graham for 10th – 12th grade students Assistant Principal Lorenz for 9th grade students HOMEWORK : 9th grade students must provide their own locks for lockers • Parents receive a unique 16 digit code for online registration • This registration captures important medical data so it must be completed by your student’s first day of school • School Counselor or Data Specialist can provide your code if you didn’t receive it by email • HOMEWORK : Online registration must be completed by your student’s first day of school. You can use this school computer to complete it if you wish.

First Day Info Student IDs NO ID Stickers Students will wear a NO ID sticker until your administrator gives you a student ID – stickers are free at this time Students that report to class without their ID or identifying sticker face a consequence Stickers are $3 for students who forget to bring their ID HOMEWORK : Get a NO ID sticker from the Principal’s Secretary • As part of our safety procedures all students are required to wear a school issued ID on a lanyard around their neck. IDs are used for: • Lunch purchases • Checking out media center materials • Attendance purposes at the front door • Your first ID is free • Students that need to purchase a replacement ID will be charged $5 • Mr. Skirtich will pull you out of class to take a photo for your Student ID

PowerSchool • PowerSchool is an online tool that offers up-to-date information for each class • Lists class grades, lists individual assignments in each class, and can help with missed assignments due to absences • Easy access to teacher email addresses • Up-to-date attendance (see what absences need excuse notes) • Both students & parents have access to PowerSchool • HOMEWORK: Obtain your student and parent PowerSchool usernames and passwords from our Data Specialist Ms. Youmans

  13. School Issued Device • Students are issued a computer to use on schoolwork at school and at home • There is a $20 insurance fee for each student payable to the Bookkeeper Ms. Morgan • There is a waiver (in the first day folder) that is required to check out a computer • HOMEWORK: Parent and student sign waiver, pay bookkeeper, then staple receipt to signed waiver. Student will bring receipt/waiver to the Media Center to check out a tablet on the first day of school.

  14. Dress Code • Shirts must be solid White or solid Navy with a collar. Students may also wear Seahawk or HHIHS T-shirts or sweatshirts. • Students may wear pants, shorts (no cargo pockets), and skirts that reach past the fingertips. The approved colors for bottoms are Black, Khaki, and Navy.  • Hole-free blue jeans are allowed on Fridays.  • Outer wear (apparel that zips from top to bottom) is not allowed. • There are consequences for students who are out of dress code. • HOMEWORK: Students must be in dress code beginning on their very first day of school

  15. PTSO Store • The PTSO Store sells HHIHS “spirit wear” including short sleeve Ts, long sleeve Ts, and sweatshirts • The spirit wear is Dress Code approved and affordable!! • During the schoolyear the store is open during ILT lunch Mon - Thurs

Transportation Bus Riders Car Riders Car riders can be dropped off and picked up in the parking lot in front of the school (front door) At no time can parents park their car in the fire lane in front of school, there is designated visitor parking in the first lane of parking spots • Bussing is organized at the School District level, the website is… http://beaufortschools.net/cms/one.aspx?pageId=1720340 • Bus routes are published on the BCSD website the week prior to school starting • HOMEWORK: If you are a bus rider you will need a bus note from Ms. O'Sullivan, the School Counseling Secretary • Bus drivers will NOT allow new students on the bus without a bus note

Student Parking Spots • There is an application for student parking spots that is on our school website (see “Students” tab) and a fee • Juniors and Seniors are given priority • Students lose their parking spot if they are tardy over the allowed amount • Parking is coordinated by Mr. Skirtich after the online application has been submitted (Joseph.Skirtich@beaufort.k12.sc.us) • HOMEWORK: Students cannot park on campus until they have applied for and obtained a parking pass for an assigned spot from Mr. Skirtich.
