  1. Early Canadian History Mrs. Burnett/Mrs. Allen 6th Grade Class

  2. Let’s Review! • What are 3 things we’ve already learned about Canada? • 1. • 2. • 3.

  3. What are we going to learn? • All about Canada’s History! • 4. • 5. • 6. • 7. • 8.

  4. After today you will be able to… • SS6H4 The student will describe the impact of European contact on Canada. • We will be talking about Canada’s very early history and how the native peoples and early European exploration influenced today’s Canada. • Throughout our history lessons you will learn to describe a connection between Canada’s history and modern culture!

  5. We’re going to making predictions! • What does this mean? • As we take notes on important terms (words) about Canada’s history we are going to forecast (predict) their meaning and importance • Before we start history, let’s learn about this strategy!

  6. Words and Predictions • A wordis a specific term used throughout our lesson. • A predictionis an educated guess using context clues and background knowledge • A prediction comes from in your head! • You’re taking information you already know to help create predictions • It’s okay if they aren’t correct! They are to get you thinking!

  7. Answers • An answer is the correctuse of the wordthat may notbe the same as your prediction. • It’s important to have a clear understanding of the answer. • Write it down! • If you do not understand an answer it’s important to ask about it! • Let’s try an example together!

  8. Word: Canada Prediction: What do you think this word means? My prediction: A country in North America right above the United States.

  9. Answer: • Canadais the country we are studying. The name comes from the Iroquois word Kanata and means village. • Fun fact: French explorer Jacques Cartier (we’ll learn more about him later!) recorded when he heard the spoken word “Kanata” in his travel journal as “Canada.” The name stuck!

  10. On your own! • We’ve already started learning about Canada’s early history! • Fun, right? • Let’s look at our next word…

  11. Word: Indigenous Hmm. What do you think this word means? Write down the word and your prediction!

  12.  The Answer – Indigenous peoples are the • first people to have lived in a region. • Scientists believe the earliest groups in Canada crossed a land bridgefrom Asia to Alaska. • This land bridge no longer exists, but wouldn’t it be cool if it did?

  13. Word: Aboriginal Oooh. What do you think this word means? Write down the word and your prediction!

  14.  The Answer – Aboriginal is the proper term to refer to the indigenous people of Canada. • These aboriginal groups still have descendants today that carry out their traditions and culture. • Fact: The term “Eskimo” is considered an inappropriate term for the Canadian Aborigines. -Use “Aboriginals” instead!

  15. Word: Inuit Who could these people be? Write down the word and your prediction!

  16. Answer: The Inuit are a native group of Canada. • They are one of threegroups that are part of the aboriginals. • Other aboriginals include the Metis, and other groups called the First Nations.

  17. Inuit Culture • History and facts: http://www.windows2universe.org/earth/polar/inuit_culture.html • On April 1, 1999, Nunavut became the newest Canadian territory. • Its creation was the outcome of the largest aboriginal land claims agreement between the Canadian government and the native Inuit people. • The Inuit make up 83% of Nunavut's 24,730 residents. • They are one of the first indigenous peoples in the Americas to achieve self-government. • You’ve been wondering: Nunavut means "our land" in the Inuit language. (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/nunavut1.html#ixzz3PX7w5UHX)

  18. Word: Vikings You probably know the meaning. But how does it relate to Canada? Write down the word and your prediction!

  19. Vikings Hit Canada! ! • The Answer – The Vikings were Norse sea raiders from present-day Scandinavia. In 1960 archeologists discovered remnants of a Viking colony in modern Newfoundland. • This area, calledL'Anse aux Meadows, is believed to have been formed in 1000 AD. It is the only wildly accepted evidence of European exploration of North America, aside from neighbor Greenland.

  20. Theories? • Some historians suggest that this colony may be related to Vinlanda colony that was rumored to be founded by famous Viking explorer Leif Erikson.
