This paper explores the contribution of government mobile applications in the agricultural sector of Nepal, assessing their appropriateness and effectiveness for farmers. It also provides recommendations for improving the access and usability of these apps.

  4. Objective • To identify government mobile application contribution for farmers.

  5. Problem • Is the ICT based Government apps for agriculture appropriate for the farmers?

Context • Agriculture contributes to 32.1 % of total GDP and 76% of total employment in Nepal • Agricultural Growth (5.3%) in 2017 • Nepal has 8 domains and 80 initiatives; agriculture is one domain with 9 initiatives: eHaat Bazaar; Precision Agriculture; Agriculture Tools Sharing; Digital Payment of Subsidies; Specialty Food Program; Digitalization of Land Records; Smart Irrigation Project; Education and Training Programs for Farmers; and State of the Art Knowledge Centers (Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, 2018) • Literacy rate of Nepal: 59.6% (Annual Household Survey 2015/16)

Recommendation • Give digital trainings to the farmers. • Access to the internet ( agricultural apps with free or less data pack amount) • Subsidies to the smart devices to the farmers (like to Education sector) • Platform for two way audio communication (expert and farmers) • Connecting directly with the consumers through apps (bypassing the middleman) • More off line videos and audio programs in the app • Push notifications • Soil data, Plant properties, crop data, farmer’s details and research data
