  2. Why • Need to use existing terminologies rather than develop / maintain our own • Availability of well maintained/structured terminologies • Improve consistency and quality of terminology content in HL7 products

  3. Terms of Reference • Advice on acceptability of terminological resources proposed for use • Maintain relationship with external terminology providers (e.g.. IHTSDO) • Develop and maintain procedures for external terminology use in HL7

  4. Steps for Work Groups • Choose a terminology to suit purpose • Is content available? • IF YES – USE IT • IF NO (and you know the system you need e.g. SNOMED CT) request content from • IF NATIONAL – National Release Centre • IF THAT OPTION UNAVAILABLE – HL7 Terminology Authority • OTHERWISE OR NOT SURE • Seek help from HL7 Terminology Authority

Getting Help! • Vocabulary Facilitators • Do you have / need one? • Additional training being developed /offered • Route to assistance from Vocabulary WG members • Contact HL7 Terminology Authority (HTA) - EARLY • Help with determining which terminology to use • Request modifications/additions to SNOMED CT • Processes for other terminologies will come later. • HTA Wiki – for general advice and guidance • Contact by emailing HTA@HL7.org
