Life before presidency. • Born March 16, 1751 • Attended the College of New Jersey (now knows as Princeton). • Madison served as a delegate to the Virginia Convention (1776). • Madison then served as a member of the Council of the State of Virginia. • From 1780 to 1783 he became a member of the Continental Congress. (being the youngest member at age 29).

Delegate of the Constitutional Convention (1787). • Got himself the nickname “Father of the Constitution” because of how he convinced delegates to a strong central government. • Virginian Representative to the House. (1789-1797). • Achievement was the introduction of the Bill of Rights. • Served as a Secretary of State to Jefferson. (1801-1809). • Became President, March 4, 1809 through March 3, 1817. • Served two terms in office.

Major Events While in Office. • Non-Intercourse Act (1809-1810). • Allowed the U.S. to trade with all nations except for France and Great Britain. • Attacks on American shipping by those two nations. • War of 1812 • Also knows as “Madison’s War”. • Lasted for two years. Confirmed American Independence. • In 1814 U.S. and British signed the Treaty of Ghent. • Treaty of Ghent • Peace treaty. • Ended the war in 1814. • Battle of New Orleans. (1814-1815). • Diverse of soldiers, sailors, including Indians and African Americans. • Defeated Britain’s troops from Europe and the west indies. • Hartford Convention. December 15, 1814 – January 5, 1815.

Random Facts. • Nickname was “Father of the Constitution”. • Famous quote “I always talk better while lying down”. • These were the words that were in his death bed. • Religion– Episcopalian • Profession: Farmer, Planter. • Shortest President. • 5ft 5in with a weight around 100 pounds. • He was the first president to wear trousers instead of knee breeches. • States entering Union while in office: Louisiana (1812). Indiana (1816).

  6. James Madison Married to Dolly Payne Todd. She was widowed when they got married. She had one son. No children besides his stepson. He died June 28, 1836
