  6. Perspectives: Vision • Do it first, or do it different… • — Anonymous • To the person who does not know where he wants to go there is no favorable wind. • — Seneca [Roman philosopher/statesman (4 BC – AD 65)] • Dissatisfaction and discouragement are not caused by the absence of things but the absence of vision. • — Anonymous • You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus. • — Mark Twain [American Philosopher/Writer (1835-1910)] • Vision without execution is hallucination. • — Thomas Edison [American Inventor (1847-1931)] Source: Various

  7. Perspectives: Innovation • The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail. • — Edwin H. Land [American Inventor (Polaroid camera) (1909-1991) • Nothing is stronger than habit. • — Ovid [Roman Poet (43 BC-?) • If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got. • — Albert Einstein [German-American Physicist (1879-1955)] • The more original a discovery, the more obvious it seems afterwards. • — Arthur Koestler [Hungarian-British Author/Journalist (1905-1983)] • The key to success is for you to make a habit throughout your life of doing the things you fear. • — Vincent Van Gogh [Dutch Artist (1853-1890)] Source: Various

  8. How to Envision: … a Workflow … • Know your values. • Know where you are. • Know what you need (or want). • Consider how to get where you want to be. • Draft a (messy) plan (a list of steps, a plot, or picture). • Comments: • You have to see it to build it. • There are no short-cuts to success. • No one owes you anything. • Failure is part of the process. • Comfort tasks recharge your batteries, not your imagination. • Always know your available resources: • Time/Money • Food/Water/Oxygen • ... red bull Source: Blasingame

  9. Motivate to Innovate: • Stretch goals (defined as more than you want to do…) • Deadlines (work fills the time allotted) • Fear as a motivator (eventually not effective) • Engage your passion (… most powerful element) • Flexibility/autonomy in how you work (has to be earned) • Responsibility (you own it) • Comments: • What you believe is who you are... • Stress is strength. • Hunger is strength. • You can do anything, but you can't do everything. • Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. • Innovation is a process, not an outcome. • … dreams move on, if you wait too long. (Billy Ray Cyrus) Source: Blasingame

  11. Closure: • In this room (right now!) there are: • People who will … lead the Petroleum Industry. • People who will … define technologies of the future. • People who will … create jobs/wealth/opportunity. • People who will … devote their lives to serve others. • People who will … effect change through their example. • People who will … adapt to any opportunity. • People who will … suffer for their art/passions. • People who will … just have a (really good) job. • Closure Questions: • What is/are the differentiator(s)? (… your desire) • Which group do you want to be in? (… your choice) • How do you get to where you want to be? (… your path) Source: Blasingame
