  4. The Obstacles and How To Solve It We are confused in choosing word. These are some words which are difficult to be translated: • ‘grey’ (3rd sentence) Most of us usually translated ‘grey’ as ‘abu-abu’ (a kind of color). But seems to be unfamiliar if we translated ‘gray hair’ as ‘rambut abu-abu’. So, to solve it, we open the dictionary, ‘grey’ can be translated as ‘abu-abu’, ‘kelabu’, ‘mendung’, and ‘beruban’. Then we think that the word ‘beruban’ is the most appropriate one to translate ‘grey’ because in Indonesian the word ‘rambut beruban’ is seems to be a natural phrase.

  5. ‘heavy’ (6th sentence) We are usually translate this word as ‘berat’. Look at this phrase:’heavy blue eye make-up’. Can we translate it as ‘ celak mata biru yang berat’? Of course it’s not the appropriate one. In dictionary, we can find that ‘heavy’ can be ‘berat’, ‘padat’, ‘ramai’, ‘tebal’, ‘keras’, ‘lebat’,etc. Because it is related with ‘make up’, we choose the word ‘tebal’.

  6. ‘large’ We are confused to translate this word in the context ‘make up’. ‘large’ usually means ‘besar’, ‘lebar’, or ‘luas’. We think that the most appropriate is ‘lebar’. But we are still nor sure with this word.

  7. We are also confused in translating a long noun phrase. These are the noun phrases: • ‘short, straight grey hair’ We are confused to decide which adjectives that must translate orderly after the noun head ‘hair’. To solve it, we write some possibility, those are: - rambut beruban lurus pendek - rambut beruban pendek lurus - rambut pendek lurus yang beruban We prefer to use the third possibility because it seems to be natural. The word ‘yang’ is the addition that makes this phrase to be more appropriate.

  8. The discussion of text 2: • Dayton’s jewellery store We can translate it “toko perhiasan Dayton”, and we should not translate it “toko perhiasan milik Dayton” because in Indonesia the name of jewellery is also the name of the owner. So we can omit “milik” here. • Five feet tall This problem is related with the culture of the target and source language. In Indonesia, it is more common if we use “meter” than “kaki” ( 1 kaki=0,3 meter=30 cm). The result, we translate it “setinggi 150 centimeter”. • Most distinguishing mark First, we translate it “ tanda yang paling membedakan”. “mark” in this phrase is related with the physical of human, so it will be appropriate if we use “ciri-ciri”, the phrase is become “ciri-ciri yang paling membedakan”

  9. largeThe complete phrase is “heavy blue eye make up and large, silver hoop earrings”. There are two phrase here, first phrase is heavy blue eye make up and the second phrase is large, silver hoop earrings. We think that the word “large” explains the word “make up”, but actually, it explains the word “earrings”. We should translate “anting-anting perak yang bulat dan besar”. • Light-skinned We translate this phrase as “berkulit cerah”, because in Indonesian the phrase “berkulit cerah” is usual to use in daily life. Indonesian also has the phrase “berkulit gelap”.

  10. The conclusion Polisi sedang mencari seorang perempuan yang mencuri sebuah kalung berlian dari toko perhiasan Dayton. Menurut manajer toko, wanita itu kira- kira setinggi 150 cm , sangat kurus, berkulit cerah, dan berumur sekitar 60 tahun. Dia mempunyai rambut pendek lurus yang beruban dan memakai kacamata.
