  2. Values • Definition: Shared beliefs about what is good or bad/ right or wrong • Values help determine the character of a society and the kind of culture they have • A culture that values war and power will be different than one that values peace and cooperation • Bullet ant ritual

  3. Norms • Norms are created to enforce cultural values • Definition: shared rules of conduct that tell people how to act in specific situations • Norms are expectations for behavior

  4. Norms • The establishment of norms does not mean everyone will follow them • Some groups are not allowed to follow norms, or have the power to supersede them

  5. Kinds of Norms • Folkways: the etiquette and customs of a peoplethat are not of critical importance to the society. • Ex: Be courteous to older people, Don’t park in the no parking zone etc. • Mores:rules of behavior that are very important sinceviolation would endangerthe basic stability of a society. • Ex: Do not kill, steal, set fireto your neighbor's house, cheat on exams, do not lie • Laws: the more complex a society becomes, the more its folkways and mores are turned into laws.

  6. Sanctions • Definition: Rewards or punishments that a society sets up to enforce the norms • Done to prevent society from going into Chaos • Formal sanctions: rewards or punishments used to enforce the laws of organizations • Informal sanctions: unwritten and based onpersonal relations involving folkways and mores, and are usually based on public opinion
