  1. Plant Growth and Development Mrs. Molloy’s Science Class DRMS – 6th Grade

  2. Growth and Development • Growth and development are necessary for plants to survive • Growth is an increase in the number, size, and volume of the plant’s cells • Development is the emergence of specialized, parts • Roots • Leaves • Flowers

  3. Germination • Seeds need certain environmental conditions to "start to grow“ or germinate. • Environmental conditions in the Spring cause a seed that has been “sleeping” all Winter to germinate • Increased rain • Increased temperatures • Increased hours of daylight

  4. Photoperiodism • Photoperiodism is a response to changes in the length of the day • Long-day plants: flower in the spring when day length is longer • Short-day plants: flower in late summer or early autumn when day length is shorter

  5. Hormones • Hormones are chemicals that act like messengers; they “tell” the plant to grow • Decrease of daylight hours trigger the reduction of auxin (hormone) and the plant stops growing

  6. Dormancy • Dormancy is a period in a plant’s life cycle when growth and development are temporarily stopped • Dormancy occurs in autumn when there are shorter days, colder nights, and less rain
