  3. Summary: • 50 years go by • Beowulf is an old man by now • Dragon guarded tower • Huge stone tower, hidden path beneath it • Below the sea, against a cliff, no windows or doors, fortress • Full of treasure- dynasty ended and it was left there

  4. Summary: • Slave stole a cup and it woke the dragon • Slave stole the cup because he needed it • Master beat slave • Brought stolen cup to master to beg for mercy • It worked • Brought peace to slave, but it opened a new can of worms for everyone else

  5. Summary: • Dragon terrorizes Geatland • Burning everything • Beowulf sees this and decides to take action • “And Beowulf uttered his final boast: “I’ve never known fear; as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.’”

  6. Summary: • This time he decides to use shield and sword since the dragon breaths fire • Says that no one else can do this deed (boastful or just plain crazy?) • Fights the dragon • Strikes him with sword, stabs the dragon a little, sword breaks

  7. Summary: • Fire all around him, fighting off with shield • Everyone who followed to help him up and left- ran away • All… but one…

  8. Summary: • Wiglaf! • Beowulf’s cousin • Never fought in battle before (novice) • Everyone vowed to repay Beowulf for his kindness when giving gifts, but • Wiglaf is the only one who stands by his promise

  9. Summary: • Wiglaf has long speech • This shows us that he is now the epic hero • Wiglaf brought wooden shield (to a fire fight?) • His burnt up, hid behind Beowulf’s shield • Beowulf lifted his sword again (Nagling) and struck the beast

  10. Summary: • “Fate had decreed that the Geat’s great king would be no better for any weapon” (46). • Dragon kept spitting fire • Dragon waited for Beowulf to be exposed, then drove his tusks into Beowulf (uh-oh) • Beowulf be dying now

  11. Summary: • Wiglaf uses sword to stab (fire stops) • Beowulf slices dragon in half • Dragon dies • Venom now in Beowulf (still dying) • Beowulf gives last speech • “I can die, here, knowing the Lord of all life has never watched me wash my sword in blood born of my own family” (48). • Tells Wiglaf to take the treasure now and use it for their kingdom

  12. Summary: • As Beowulf dies, he tells Wiglaf to have the Geats build him a tomb after the funeral fire • Tomb will be on that land near the sea so all of the sailors can see it • Call it Beowulf’s tower • Gave his gold covered armor to Wiglaf • Beowulf is really dead now

  13. Summary: • Wiglaf comes out, all of the cowards emerge • Wiglaf gives them speech about being bad soliders and friends • Says that he will tell all about their cowardly ways and they’ll forever live in disgrace
