  1. The ART OF STUDY GROUPS A POWERFUL TOOL SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE USE

  2. WHY STUDY IN GROUPS? • THE OLD SAYING, ‘TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE,’ TURNS OUT TO BE TRUE! ANOTHER PERSON WILL POINT OUT SOMETHING YOU DID NOT NOTICE OR WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT INTERPRETATION OF IT. • THE ACT OF READING, THINKING AND COMPOSING SENTENCES FOR VERBAL COMMUNICATION FORCES THINGS FROM SHORT INTO LONG TERM MEMORY • THE VARIOUS DYNAMICS OF A SUCCESSFUL GROUP HELPS ENCOURAGE FOCUS AND MUCH NEEDED BREAKS. • GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE AND ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS FOR FURTHER ASSIGNMENTS AND PRESENTATIONS. • IT’S FUN!!!! (Most of the time!)

  3. What is a successful group study? • 4 - 5 people • All members have intact notes and have read the necessary texts • Each member has agreed to become an expert on one part of the divided up material. • Meetings scheduled 3 times the week before the test is to be written • One person in the group organizes the times and keeps in touch with all the members. • Reminder emails, BBMs or Facebook messages are sent to all the members • Commitment!!!! • One agreed upon central location and consistent meeting times • Cancellations are not an option, especially the week of the test.

  4. How to pick your group members • There are some characteristics you should look for when choosing people to be a part of your study group: • Connectedness: Access to the internet or a mobile phone. • Punctuality: Comes to lectures and tutorials on-time • Participation: Volunteers answers during tutorials • Attentiveness: Pays attention during lectures and tutorials. • Friendliness: Has a smile and a hello when approached at the very least. • Dependability: Is consistently present and seems to hand in assignments on-time. • They maybe watching you for these qualities too!!! If you don’t exhibit them then they will not want to help you! Pick me!!

  5. How to Run the Meeting • Choose a room that has little to no distractive items. Getting a room in the local library, a basement that has no TV or entertainment materials or living room/dining room is preferable. • Bring pens, laptops, lined paper, texts, notes and media required from the course • Each member should have a shortened version of their section ready to handout to the members. A handout with bullet points of the things needed to be studied in their section would be preferable. That member should be ready to explain the sheet to the members and then go through two exercises with the group: • 1) Memorization techniques – repeating the information, writing the information down on a study sheet that each member has and reading it over. • 2) Quizzing Techniques – The presenting member should have questions ready to quiz the group based on their section. • This process is repeated 4 – 5 times during this meeting (each member presenting their expert area) will make the meeting a typical length of three hours.

  6. What your brain needs • There are some things you need to be aware of that should be done before and during these study sessions due to their length and intensity: • A nap before a study session or a good night’s sleep is a great way to make sure your brain is ready to receive what you will give it. • Eating just before a study session is a important factor to the success of the meeting. Anything heavy and carb filled will induce sleepiness as the starches are converted to sugars and then insulin. Light snacks, veggies and fruit beforehand is a better idea and the heavy meal either occurring 4 hours before or anytime after the session. • Eating during the session is fine. Stick to foods like nuts, grapes, berries, granola and yogurt. You can get away with chips and popcorn as they are not likely to cause sleepiness. • Hydration is essential. Water and sugar free sports drinks are the best solution. • Work in 15 minute breaks every hour at least. Go for a walk, stretch or have a laugh!!! Your brain needs time to commit things to long term memory.

  7. Technological Aids to Group Study • Making use of online chat rooms and programs are a great way to get together in addition to physical meetings. • Facebook offers group capabilities so that you can have ongoing discussions and post questions. • Blackberry Messenger also has group capabilities for real time discussions and questions. • Other applications such as Live and WhatsApp offer group chat as well.

  8. An organized approach to studying is really the key to a successful test experience!!!
