  3. Life in France before the war • Nearly 40 million people lived in France at the beginning of the 1900’s • 40% population were farmers • George V and his wife May (Mary) were in reign

  4. Paris in Chaos • Word of the German advance on French boundaries alarmed Paris residents. • Some who had lived their whole lives there moved • Young civilian men are drafted

  5. 'Adieu' et 'Au revoir' ! " Meaning: “Good-bye” and “Goodbye”! ” A woman says her final goodbyes as the soldiers march down the road to eminent death.

  6. French Army Slogans and mottos • The slogan of the French Army during the Great War was, 'L'attaqueà la outrance’ means always immediately counterattack L'audace, encore l'audace, toujoursl'audace = Be daring, again more daring, always daring L'élan vital = The vital impulse.

  7. France goes to Battle • France was forced to enter the war and quickly by Germany’s rapid advance to Paris • Germany intended and followed through with curling around Paris and and having an offensive on nearly every side of Paris • Acted as a saboteur, seizing the city

First battle of Marne • Germany had advanced within 30 miles of Paris • South of the Marne River Joseph Joffre commanded his 150,000 troops to attack. • Germany left a 30 mile gap in between their first and second army • France was prompt to take advantage • France and it’s allies won probably the most key battle of the war on September 12, 1914. • The six day battle was marked the end of the German advance and onslaught • It provided a glimmer of hope for the French

  12. First Battle of Marne (Battle Tactics) • The goal of any army is not have any gaps • Armies may have to retreat, but they need to stay in a connected line • The line can be bent and stretched but not broken

Christmas Truce • Ceased fire on Christmas day on the year of 1914 • Played soccer and ate and smoked with the enemies • Went to enemies funeral ceremonies • Shows the humane and peacefulness of people • Many soldiers who became friendly with others • that day later killed each other in battle within the next week

  16. Chemical Warfare Gave attacking and defending soldiers a decent amount of range between the enemy Gas masks were used to prevent the deathly gas from entering your lungs Tear gas, severe mustard gas, chlorine, and phosgene were deployed

  19. Battle of Verdun • Over 0.7 million dead soldiers altogether • Verdun was France’s last stronghold • France won in the end

Battle of Somme • Fought mainly by Germans and French • Fight lasted 4 and a half months • The outcome favored allied forces slightly but not enough to call it a won battle • Over 600,000 men and nearly 800 casualties occurred on the entente’s forces. • Germany suffered over 450,000 casualties

  22. Casualties/ End of the war • Nearly 8.5 million casualties occurred in the French Army • This includes 3 million of it’s soldiers deceased • Special boundaries • New areas of lands • New reigns and rule over a country

  23. France current Times • Disputes over islands against Madagascar • Around 65 million people • 2.6% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) are spent for military • Once a city being threatened by bombs, Paris is now the romance capital of the world
