  10. 4. God, Gold & Glory Monarchs needed more resources to pay for the wars . Catholics wanted to spread Christianity & diminish the influence of Muslims. The explorers wanted to please their patron and get more support for more adventures.

New Equipment Sailors had better navigational tools for exploring uncharted waters: Astrolabe (as·tro·labe) an astronomical instrument for taking the altitude of the sun or stars and for the solution of other problems in astronomy and navigation Sextantan astronomical instrument used to determine latitude and longitude at sea by measuring angular distances, especially the altitudes of sun, moon, and stars. octantan instrument having an arc of 24°, used by navigators for measuring angles up to 90°. Compass an instrument for determining directions, as by means of a freely rotating magnetized needle that indicates magnetic north.
