  3. Charge/Mission • To bring community organizations and entities together to identify resources and programs that help ALL students feel valued and more engaged in our schools

  4. Status of committee • Met five times as a group • Developed strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and drafted goals • Identified the need to connect our existing resources to better meet needs of students with more innovative programming • Researched data to support goals • Came to consensus on four goals • Developing feasible action items for each goal

Four Goals • Kids in seats: all kids at all schools will be in seats all day • Reduce unexcused absences toward zero over the next five years, so that the number of habitually truant students will be 2% or less. • Leveraging community resources to create diverse learning opportunities for students including service learning and vocational programs • Develop innovative learning opportunities for students • Begin process to match students’ interests and needs with community resources • Empowering parents to be engaged in student success by providing increased two-way communication, training, and support • Focus on transitions from elementary to middle and from middle to high school • Increase number of adult mentors for students other than a parent • Provide appropriate and constructive support and guidance

  6. Next steps • Take feedback from today to refine our work and revise priorities if needed • Create additional action items for each goal • Identify resources • Adjust timeline • Finalize plan for implementation

Goal #1: Kids in seats All kids are motivated to be in school all day all year • Reduce unexcused absences toward zero over the next five years, so that the number of habitually truant students will be 2% or less. • Analyze the existing truancy and attendance data for LAPS, including disaggregation by school, grade level, and AYP demographics. • Develop necessary tools to gather more data on the reasons for unexcused absences. • Analyze open campus policy for LAHS – basis for leaving campus. • Provide early intervention including counseling and Saturday School both funded by JJAB • Sustain high levels of attendance in all schools which is essential for student success and state funding • Develop public awareness campaign and communication plan with parents.

Goal #2: Use resources to create more meaningful opportunities for all students • Develop and sustain Career Ready Programs Council to create more innovative programming and unique learning opportunities for students • Council will be comprised of LAPS staff, local business, organizations and entities such as UNMLA, LANL, YMCA, Fire Dept. LAPD • Council will meet regularly to create develop career readiness skills • Examples include new AA program in Fire Science at UNMLA, Schools to World, LANL Community Programs Office • Put in place processes to match students’ interests and needs with community resources while earning academic credit • To include service learning credit offered at Middle School and High School

Goal #3 Increase parent empowerment and communication • Empower parents to be engaged in student success by increasing two-way communication, training, and support new students to the district andacross transitions from elementary to middle and from middle to high school. • Offer parent trainings on such topics as homework, academic home support, and programs like the Positive Behavior Intervention Program • Partner with organizations such as School PTOs, Family Strength Network and Family Council to provide ongoing support for LAPS families

Goal #4 Increase opportunities for cultivating adult mentor relationships • Develop mentor outreach program to train, vet and coordinate mentors • Partner with organizations already similar work i.e. LANL Community Programs Office, & Volunteer Match • Reach out to students through athletics, school clubs, community clubs, activity centers, teen center, and libraries • Look to replicate existing models such as Michelangelo’s lunch program for at risk boys at the MS
