  1. Gearless Vs. Non-Geared Bicycle: Which Is The Best Option For You? If you’re not a regular rider, you may not know the difference between a geared and a non-geared bicycle. Just as the name suggests, geared cycles are those that come with a number of gears while a bicycle without gear is one that does not have any gears or shifters. Each of these types of cycles has its own benefits as well as drawbacks. If you’re planning to buy a bicycle and are not sure whether to choose a geared or a non-geared bicycle then this guide will give you all the necessary insight into both the bicycle types.

  2. Gearless Bicycles These are traditional bicycles commonly used by people. This is the most common type of bicycle in India and has only one gear. There are two types of gearless bicycles: - Free Wheel Cycle This is called a free wheeled bicycle because the wheel in this type of cycle is free from the movement of the cog. The cog is attached to the rear wheel by means of bearing tools and as such the wheel moves independently of the cog. As you pedal on, the cog puts forward the wheel in the directions of the pedaling but also, your wheel will not stop moving when you stop pedaling and rather keep moving forward. You will need to use the brakes to slow down the cycle. This type of bicycle has both front and rear gears to control the movement of the cycle. - Fixed Wheel Cycle The rear cassette of a fixed wheel bicycle is locked with a lockring, which means the speed of the bicycle will depend on how fast or slow you pedal. In this type of cycle, both the wheel and the cog are dependent on each other. As you keep pedaling forward or backward accordingly the wheel will move forward or backward. This type of bicycle is suitable for those who have gained some control over riding a bicycle. Geared Bicycles These are modern-day bicycles that are designed with innovative cogs to cover long distances in a short span of time. These bicycles come with gears or shifters that you change in order to adjust how fast or slow you want to go.this type of cycle makes it easy to ride in different types of terrain. You can use a high gear to go downhill and a low gear to go uphill, use a medium gear for flat roads. The ability to shift gears thus makes for smooth riding experience. The best bicycle brands in India. Comparing Gearless And Geared Bicycle Both geared and the non-geared cycle has advantages as well as disadvantages and by comparing their pros and cons you can decide better which is the ideal choice for you. - Usage Geared cycles are comparatively easy to use whereas you need to learn the different high and low gear mechanisms to be used in different terrains in order to proficiently use a geared bicycle. - Terrain Although gearless bicycles can be used for a little bumpy ride within the city, geared bicycles are highly suitable for rough terrains as well. The different gears present in the bicycle allows you to drive across different terrains with ease. - Maintenance

  3. Both geared and gearless cycles are made of components that are susceptible to rusting after prolonged use and as such both require maintenance from time to time. However, geared cycles may be a little costlier on maintenance as it may require changing cogs from time to time, which can be a little expensive. - Distance Gearless bicycles are a good option if you simply want to commute within the city like going to work or going to school. They are not meant for riding long distances. A bicycle without gear, on the other hand, are known for their speed and can cover long distances within a short period of time - Comfort Gearless bicycles comprise of only one gear, which means the speed of the bicycles is dependent on how hard you push the pedals and this can eventually tire your legs out. Gearless bicycle, on the other hand, balances comfort with its multiple gear mechanism.
