  1. 81% of Americans believe in heaven • 70% of Americans believe in hell Gallop Poll, 2004

  2. Doubters & Deniers of Hell Annihilationistswho believe that the soul goes out of existence and does not endure everlasting punishment (e.g. Edward Fudge) • They say that God is a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29) but that is God NOT HELL! • They reason that punishment is “destruction” (Matthew 10:28; 7:13-14)which they take to mean “going out of existence” or “ceasing to exist.” • Destruction is a loss of well-being, not a loss of being (Ps. 55:23; Pro. 10:15; 16:18; Rom 3:16) • The unrighteous“will go away into everlasting punishment”!(Matthew 25:46)

  3. Doubters & Deniers of Hell Those who over-emphasize that God is love • God is love, but He is also a consuming fire and a just Judge who cannot lie! (Hebrews 12:29; 6:18; Psalm 103:6) • He has the power and the will to cast men into hell (Luke 12:4-5; cf. 2 Peter 2:4)

  4. Doubters & Deniers of Hell Those who think that man is not bad enough for hell • They say things like, “Hell is there and ready to receive anyone who meets the condition for falling into it, but it’s quite possible no one will really go there.”(Prof. Avery Dulles, Fordham University) • Jesus saw hell as a very real possibility for many men (Mathew 23:33; 5:22) • Willful sinners should see hell as “a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries” (Heb. 10:27)

  5. The Biblical Reality of Hell • A terrible continual punishment of fire (Matthew 13:40-50; Mark 9:43-48) • A real place prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41) • Outer darkness (Matthew 25:30) • Separation from Christ (John 15:6; Revelation 21:23-27)

  6. The Benefits of Hell • It motivates us to holiness and purity (Matthew 5:29-30; Mark 9:43-48) • It makes full reliance upon God a necessity (2 Peter 3:9) • It makes service to God and evangelizing your fellowman a priority (Jude 21-23) • It makes heaven possible (Revelation 21:1-8, 27)

  7. “For destruction from God is a terror to me, And because of His magnificence I cannot endure.” -- Job 31:23
