Coding with symbols: • (+) for ideas or claims in which you agree • (-) for ideas or claims with which you disagree • (!) for ideas or claims that surprise or anger you, or cause a strong reaction • (?) for ideas or claims you doubt or need evidence before believing • (*) for important passages, quotes, or facts you want to remember

  3. Margin Notes • Mark you reactions as you read. Besides the coding symbols, you must also include brief notes in the margins and between the lines., This will help you to complete the writing reflection at the end of the assignment.

  4. Reflection/Prompt Response • You will either have to reflect on the article or answer a prompt. • If you are reflecting, think about these questions: • What is the article about? • Who is the audience for this piece? • What is the writer’s purpose in writing this piece? To inform? To persuade? To entertain? • What is your opinion about the article? Do you agree or disagree, why? • USE EVIDENCE FROM THE ARTICLE TO BACK UP YOUR WRITING! DO THIS ALWAYS!

  5. Conversation Preparation • Be prepared to speak about the article. • Use will use academic conversation when having discussion. • You will be respectful of your teammates and what they have to say, • We will use small and large group discussions.
