  1. Article of the Week Daily Activity Directions

Overview • Article of the Week is a new requirement for the third six weeks. • Each Monday, you will receive a new informational/non-fiction article to read & work with over the course of the week. • You will have an activity to complete daily that correlates with the curriculum/standards & prepares you for the EOC. • Time will be given in class to start the daily activity; however, you may have to finish it for homework. • The Article of the Week activities will be graded.

  3. Article of the Week - Monday • Read and annotate the article to show evidence of a close reading • – DO NOT use a highlighter • Circle unfamiliar words • Write notes in margins • Ask questions in margins • Make connections in the margins • Interpret & summarize passages in margins • Express confusion in margins • Observations about writer’s strategies (organization, word choice, perspective, support) & how choices affect article • Use symbols like +(agree), –(disagree), *(important), !(surprising), ?(wondering)in the margins

  4. Article of the Week - Tuesday • Reread this week’s article and: • -Complete the SOAPSTone graphic organizer for the article • * See the separate Power Point, if you need help/reminders

  5. Article of the Week - Wednesday • Reread this week’s article and: • -Identify literary devices (similes, metaphors, allusions, hyperbole, understatement, etc.) • -Identify rhetorical strategies* (repetition, parallel structure, syntax, diction) • *See the separate Power Point, if you need help/reminders

  6. Article of the Week - Thursday • Skim/Reread this week’s article and: • -Write a 1 page reflection of the article using the questions at the end of the article as guidance (if there is more than one question, respond to each in a separate paragraph) • -OR some of the articles may have a “They Say, I Say” template that you can complete; however, the response must be a minimum of 250 words

  7. Article of the Week - Friday • Reread this week’s article and: • -Complete the EOC-style questions (will be completed in class) • -Turn in daily assignments (staple in order of days with article on top)
