  1. DWR & Agency Geospatial Information Systems Services “Proposed DWR AGOL and Portal for ArcGIS Model” Danny Luong Nick Perez 8/12/14

  2. AGOL vs Portal for ArcGIS • Functionality differences between AGOL & Portal (1 of 3) • Portal is designed for on-premise; for organizations not ready for cloud or in a disconnected environment • Portal has built-in AD by default and will support Enterprise Group authentication in V10.3 . • Both provide website, a map viewer, a content repository, and an API; however, they run in different environments.

  3. AGOL vs Portal for ArcGIS • Functionality differences between AGOL & Portal (2 of 3) • Portal allows you to more tightly integrate with ArcGIS server and network environment. • Some capabilities such as configuring your own routing services with the map viewer or sharing the security settings of your organizational users and your ArcGIS Server site, are only possible in Portal for ArcGIS. • Geo-enrichment is available with AGOL and through an Geo-enrichment JavaScript API

  4. AGOL vs Portal for ArcGIS • Functionality differences between AGOL & Portal (3 of 3) • Portal for ArcGIS is a more appropriate choice than AGOL when: • Require full control over hardware running the portal in order to maintain a particular SLA; • Data is prohibited from being physically stored-off premises

  5. Logical Architecture Model

  6. Proposed Portal for ArcGIS Servers

  7. AGOL Cost Containment Model and Best Practices • User Management • Limiting administrators (one admin per group (e.g Division or Office)) • Define qualifying publishers within groups • Custom roles • Credit Management • Governance policy • Credit Estimator (Estimate credit usage upfront) • Activity Dashboard (track credit usage)

  8. AGOL vs Portal for ArcGIS (Licensing) • AGOL • DWR ELA contract has a fixed 10,000 ($1,000) AGOL credits. Additional AGOL credits can be purchased from Esri as needed • One thousand AGOL credits is equivalent to $100. • Portal for ArcGIS • A set limit of named users (TBD) for Portal for ArcGIS will be allotted when V10.3 is released. Additional named users can be purchased as needed.

  13. Custom Roles Template

  14. AGOL-Portal Use Cases • AGOL Use Case: • User wanting to create a quick map and share services contain non-sensitive information to internal/external audience • Portal For ArcGIS Use Case: • User want to share map services only to internal DWR domain users • Working with data prohibited from being physically stored-off premises

  15. Summary… • Proposed the hybrid model (AGOL & Portal for ArcGIS Server) • We need to develop governance to oversee AGOL Cost Containment Model/ Credits Monitoring (EGC or DTS • Divisions are responsible for purchasing additional named users for Portal for ArcGIS and AGOL credits
