General • You are all fully capable of getting a 5 on this exam if you slow down, read carefully, and write a fully developed commentary. • Include a 2-3 sentence summary of the contents of the passage/poem in your intro • Support all claims with quoted (not paraphrased) text (detail, detail, detail!) • Don’t completely ignore whole stanzas in a poem or beginnings and endings of prose passages

  3. General • Image vs. imagery • Use your terms (metaphor) • Poems have speakers, not narrators; prose passages have narrators • Don’t forget to discuss structure and sound (in relation to meaning) with poems. Consider these things with prose as well.

  4. Dominant Effect • What feeling do I or should I get from this poem or passage? • Then: what choices has the author made to create that feeling?
