  3. Modeling Instruction When you look at any predictions (i.e. weather, stock market, global warming) it is all based on a mathematical model developed by analyzing data. I want my students to practice what it is like to do real science and create Modelsbased on Evidence.

  9. Unit Routine Part 2Model Deployment • Students apply the determined Model to new situations. • Increasingly challenging problems • Individual and Group problem solving • Lab practicum • Mid-unit and end of unit assessments

  10. Student Feelings/Reactions • This class approaches learning unlike many of the other classes your student has had. They are typically uneasy about it for 4-8 weeks. • The units are designed for students to gain understanding throughout the process. They will be confused as they are deploying the Model to different situations. This is OK for the first 3-5 days of the unit! They should be comfortable by the end of week 2 of each unit.

  12. My Thoughts • Students should be given multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency. • Students should be expected to consistently show proficiency to be considered proficient.

Under the traditional system…. • homework is graded, so a student does not have a chance to show understanding before being assessed. • all students are expected to understand a concept the first time it is taught. • students have one chance to show proficiency over a concept. • students believe the teacher has control over their grade.

  14. Under standards-based system… • “homework” becomes practice. Feedback is given, but no grade (assessment) is given. • students have more time, if needed, to understand a concept. • students have multiple opportunities to show proficiency over a concept. • students know that they control their grade.

  15. What about homework? • There is no more “homework”. We will call it what it is, practice. • Practice problems will be assigned most days and discussed the next class. • Practice will not be graded. The practice problems will receive feedback. Students will identify which problems they are having trouble and their group or the class will work through the problems. • I will give feedback (help) along the way, but I consider myself a “coach” more than a “player”.

  16. When do I see a traditional grade? • Students must demonstrate learning on all C Level objectives to earn at least a 70% • Students who demonstrate learning on A Level objective will earn up to 20% more. • The final 10% will be based on their performance on the final exam. • Their final grade will be listed at the end of the semester. • You will be able to check which learning objectives they need to master on the school grading program.
