  1. Agenda Item: 5.f.iiSuomi-NPP Operations Status, Planning and Roadmap by: NOAA Tom Schott and Chris Sisko Tel.: +1-301-817-4415 (T. Schott) and +1-301-817-4783 (C. Sisko) Mail: tom.schott@noaa.gov (T. Schott) and chris.a.sisko@noaa.gov (C. Sisko)

  2. SNPP launched on October 28th, 2011 at 0948 UTC. • Successful insertion into the 1330 LTAN orbit (PM). • Spacecraft Commissioning completed on March 8, 2012 • NOAA assumed SNPP Satellite Control Authority on February 22nd, 2013. • Transition of product generation system (NDE) to OSPO operations is scheduled to occur by July 31st, 2013. • JPSS Proving Ground campaign is underway to further exploit use of SNPP data using direct readout sites. • Calibration and validation activities are ongoing.

  3. Recent events: • VIIRS Day-Night-Band capability demonstrated as a new science and operational tool. • CrIS full spectrum capability test (Mar 12th, 2013). • ATMS and CrIS SDRs reach provisional status (Feb 2013). • Issues being worked (ongoing): • VIIRS Rotating Telescope Assembly (RTA)/ Half Angle Mirror (HAM) Sync Loss. • VIIRS Mirror degradation due to Tungsten Oxide contamination—delayed initial sensor(s) activation—instrument remains within system specifications. • VIIRS Single Board Computer (SBC) lockup. • Spacecraft maneuvers: • VIIRS Lunar Roll (~9 per year) for VIIRS calibration activities. • Drag Make-up maneuver for maintaining optimum geo-location. • Inclination Maneuvers (~3 per mission) to ensure optimum LTAN maintenance. • Risk Mitigation Maneuvers as potential conjunctions are identified by NASA Conjunction Assessment Risk Analysis (CARA) team.

  4. Provisional Maturity • ATMS SDR / TDR • CrIS SDR • VIIRS SDR / GEO • VIIRS EDR Imagery (non-NCC) • VIIRS IP – Cloud Mask • OMPS SDR (NP & TC) • Beta Maturity • VIIRS Active Fires • VIIRS EDR – SST / Ocean Color & Chlorophyll • VIIRS EDR – Surface Type / Vegetation Index • VIIRS IP – Surface Reflectance • VIIRS Aerosol Optical Thickness • VIIRS Aerosol Particle Size Parameter • CrIMMS EDR (AVMP & AVTP) • Validated / Calibrated – performance and calibration have been characterized, data/product is ready for use. • Provisional – data/product quality may not be optimal, incremental improvement still occurring. • Beta – early release data/product that has been minimally validated and may contain significant errors. OMPS EDR (NP and TC): Awaiting updates and path forward on: (1) Dark Current, (2) Smear, (3) Stray Lightfrom OMPS Team before “Provisional” approval. Instrument / Record / Type Definitions: ATMS – Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder CrIS – Cross-track Infrared Sounder VIIRS – Visible Infrared Imager / Radiometer Suite OMPS – Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite CERES – Cloud and Earth Radiant Energy System CrIMMS – CrIS and ATMS combination SDR – Sensor Data Record TDR – Temperature Data Record EDR – Environmental Data Record IP – Intermediate Product NP – Nadir Profile TP – Total Column Profile http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/jpss/Data.php

  5. ATMS and CrIS SDRs provided in near real-time to NWP Centers: NCEP, EUMETSAT/ECMWF, CMC – data are re-broadcast via GTS and EUMETcast. • Select VIIRS imager (375m resolution) channels sent to NWS Alaska Region via AWIPS Satellite Broadcast Network (SBN) – used in analysis for aviation, marine and public forecasts above 600 North and for sea ice analysis. • S-NPP imagery (moderate channels and DNB) from direct readout used by NWS Alaska Region Forecast Offices (Anchorage & Fairbanks). Volcanic ash plume (Kamchatka Peninsula) Image of Alaska (day-night band)

  6. Status on Transition to Operations activities: • most of the training activities have been completed. • NDE Production Environment (PE-1) Operational Readiness Review (ORR) is scheduled for July 23rd. • NDE PE-1 operational handover occurs on July 31st, 2013. • NDE PE-1 operational connections will be established after July 31st (in August) for EUMETSAT and NWS numerical prediction center and field offices and the NDE STE ops connections will be deprecated. • NDE and OSPO staff will work collectively between July 31st and Jan 31st to maintain system reliability. • NDE delivers STE as PE-2 to OSPO by January 2014. PE-1 = Production Environment-1 (ops system) PE-2 = Production Environment-2 (test system) STE = System test Environment (test system)

  7. Latest roadmap for system deployment: • NDE PE-1 (ops system) becomes operational on July 31st, 2013. • NDE PE-2 (test system) goes operational after Jan 31st, 2014. • PDA (Enterprise Distribution System – Product Distribution and Access) is ready for Integration & Testing by the middle of 2014. • PDA goes operational by late 2014 (TBD). • PDA becomes operational at our backup site called CBU (located in Fairmont, WV) in the late 2015 time period. • PDA will provide distribution of operational products for our real-time users and NDE will provide product generation capability. NDE 2.0 & PDA NDE 1.0/2.0 & PDA
