  11. Types of Skill? Simple Skills/Basic Skills • Little cognitive involvement • Sub-conscious control • E.g. running Complex Skills • Lots of cognitive involvement • Conscious control • E.g. spike in Volleyball, floor sequence in gymnastics

  12. open skills • Concerned with the environment • Have no clear and beginning and end • Externally paced – you do not control when to execute the skill. • E.g. passing – you need to take into account opponents, team mates, speed of the ball. • YouTube - Hoffa bests Nelson in shot put

  13. Closed skills • Concerned with the environment remaining constant/fixed. • Have a clear beginning and end. • Self paced – you control when to execute the skill. • E.g. vault in gymnastics – the equipment is fixed, no influence from other people or the weather. • YouTube - wales rugby

  14. Continuums A Skill Continuum • A continuum is a gradual change from a greater or lesser extent. Netball Pass High Jump Gymnastics OPEN CLOSED Judo Archery Running Vault SIMPLE COMPLEX

  16. Types of Skill High jump could be put to the middle of the continuum. The jump itself is a closed skill, but the run up must consider the weather, surface and height of the bar. YouTube - high jump
