  1. Skill of the Week Week 01: Capitalization Rules

  2. Example Sentences (You Copy These Down) • He drove his Nissan south to get to the South. • The president will address Congress. • My Uncle Dave, a senior citizen who studies biology, is older than my mom.(Now, you write down three things you notice under “What Do I Notice?”)

  3. The Rule(s) (You write all these down) • Common nouns are not capitalized; proper nouns are. • Directions are not capitalized but locations are (e.g. going south vr. the South). • Titles (Mr., Miss, Mrs.) • Relatives (titles ONLY if replacing name, e.g. the president vr. Mr. President) • School subjects (only if languages or countries) • The first letter of a sentence, NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!!

  4. I Do (You copy these down) • I studied psychology and English in college. • I went to Albion College and Michigan State University. • Kelly, my aunt, lives in Guymon, Oklahoma with my Uncle Mike.

  5. We Do (You make up three of your own) • I will be coming around to check these. You need to be conversing with your group members regarding your sentences; however, you may NOT simply copy down one another’s sentences. This will result in a loss of points for your group.

  6. Tuesday (You copy these down) • My dogs, Basil, Sparty and Gidget, are all rescue dogs from the pound. • Sparty is a Boston Terrier, but Basil is a mutt. • Both of my cats are rescues as well; Serafin is a Siamese mix and Lui is a mix.

  7. We Do (You make up three of your own). • I will be coming around to check these. You need to be conversing with your group members regarding your sentences; however, you may NOT simply copy down one another’s sentences. This will result in a loss of points for your group.

  8. Thursday (you copy these down) • When we went to Florida, we drove south through the South. • I had a taco at Taco Casa in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. • Ms. Hensley says that Mexican food in Kansas is much different than in Texas.

  10. Skill of the Week Capitalization Quiz 1 What you need: • A writing utensil • A piece of notebook paper with the holes intact. • Place your correct heading on your paper. Title is SoW Capitalization Quiz 1 • A privacy folder

  12. Friday Quiz • All you need out is a writing utensil. EVERYTHING else should be cleared off of your table. YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME TO STUDY!
