    6. Persecution. WHY??? Polygamy – Scandalous!!!!!!!!!!!!! Conversion – Fearful of More Mormons Religion dominating the law = Bad Mormon army and police, No descent Chosen Ones – Arrogant Ownership – Against US culture Polygamy seen as scandalous and as bad as slavery by many Americans, efforts at conversion annoyed others and gave fear of a rapid expansion of the population of Mormons, the Mormons hope to attain public office threatened no believers with religiously inspired legislation. America’s founding fathers had opposed a mix of Church and State where religion dominates the government. The Mormons raised an army and secret police called the Danites. This organisation caused tension and violence between themselves and non believers. Between 1837 and 1838 in Missouri the Mormons were accused of helping Black slaves escape and plotting with the local Indians, the state governor said the Mormons should be exterminated or driven out. EXTERMINATE!!! This is why the Mormons created the Danites. Claims that Mormons were the chosen ones of God made the Mormons seem arrogant to the rest of the United States. Individual ownership is very important to American culture, ironically working as a community made the Mormons wealthy and this also annoyed non Mormons.
