Christopher Columbus“Admiral of the Ocean Seas” *Goal was to find a shorter route to Asia (Indies) Why? *Queen & King of Spain funded the exploration Why? *Late spring of 1492, Columbus left Palos, Spain with a crew of 89 men and 3 ships Name the ships : SM, N, P *On Oct.11, 1492, came upon an island and thought what….??? He had reached the Indies (Asia). Words to Remember: navigator, navigation, merchant, profit, Columbian Exchange, inhabitant

  6. How did the Columbian Exchange Effect the Europeans and the Natives? Positive Effects Harmful Effects Europeans cut down rain forests on the Carribbean islands to build sugar farms. Many plants and animals were destroyed. Many natives died because of the diseases the Europeans brought • Europeans got new foods which probably made them healthier. (potatoes, corn, peanuts, tomatoes, chocolate, peppers, squashes, and beans) • Europeans probably made money selling goods • Europeans (Columbus) brought cows, horses, pigs, wheat, barley, sugar.
