  1. London BGOP Network Meeting on Older People’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Thursday 25th May 2006 Helen Bowers - Director, Older People’s Programme

  2. What is ‘Spotlight’? • A report – and an action plan about improving older people’s mental health and wellbeing across London • One day workshop in 2005 with older people, practitioners, service providers, local planners, London Development Centre, BGOP, OPP and the ‘MOOTS’ partnership • About older people’s lives and aspirations focus on wellbeing & contributions rather than illness, impairment, deficit & disability • Hearing the voices and experiences of older people living with a range of mental health difficulties • Different kinds of support, opportunities and action involving older people, carers, practitioners, providers, commissioners, policy makers, researchers – and others!

  3. Nine Hopes for the Future • More human contact • Focus on where people live, not where services provided • Positive & helpful media attention • Creative, flexible person centred support • A powerful voice for older people, including voices not usually heard • Changing attitudes & mindsets about mental health issues & older people • More opportunities for stimulating activities, learning & fun • Culturally responsive & accessible services • Valuing & developing those working with older people

  4. Seven Things to Avoid • Older people with mental health problems are not actively involved or engaged…..at any level • Ageism & other discrimination • Stigma associated with mental health problems • Unhelpful media coverage • Inflexible, rigid services • Isolation & loneliness • A ‘medical model’ of support

  5. Local and London-wide Action Plans • London–wide action to take this forward • Harnessing ideas and energy to create “Capital Services for a Capital City” for all older people • A much broader network of support & interest in this work: lifestyles, rights-based approach, active communities, social inclusion & quality of life (etc) • Increasing participation of older people with mental health needs, their carers, and others • Recognising the positive & negative impact of all strategies & plans on older people’s mental health and wellbeing • Leadership to drive this forward with authority and accountability for making things happen across all arenas and services.
