Ming Rise • 1368 – 1644 • Yuan Dynasty removed by Chinese “rebel” forces • Led by Zhu Yuanzhang (Jooh yoo-ahn-jahng) • Took name Hong Wu when he became emperor • Ming • Means brilliant • Would rule for 300 years • Move Capital to Nanjing • to monitor Mongols(was in Tatu/Beijing) • Later moved back to Cambaluc (renamed Beijing) • Completely rebuilt • Confucian Revival • Rule Modification • No one exempt from punishments • CSE had become corrupt (people pay others to take exams) • “a gentleman could be ordered to die but should never be humiliated” • Time of Economic prosperity and peace • However, there were problems in north because of invaders • Government paid people to move to northern regions

Exploration under the Ming • Ming Navy • Funded by early emperors • Junks – massive ships • Chinese Naval Expeditions:1405 – 1433 • Led by Zheng He • Purpose: To glorify Chinese accomplishments and NOT Expansion or not really trade • 7 expeditions • Brought back exotic animals • Expeditions lost favor • Expensive and later emperors didn’t like • Wanted to focus on military forces for the North • Zheng He returned and leaned expeditions were over • “All” records of expeditions were destroyed
