  2. Brief Overview of Project (Innovation) While books will always be a mainstay in classrooms, they are now available in a highly technological form called eBooks (Electronic Books). This project will enlighten students of all ages to the advantages of using eBooks and also give them an opportunity to write their own stories and upload them to the eReaders. eReaders are the devices used for reading eBooks.

  3. More on The Project For this project, the students will use computers to write their very own sequels to their favorite stories. Everyone will begin writing their sequels on the first Monday of the month. They will add on to their stories weekly and the deadline to finish will be the last Friday of the month. Each students finished sequel will be proofread by the other students and then uploaded to eReaders for everyone to enjoy. Students who read with a purpose become better readers.

  4. For Example We all know that Charlotte the Spider dies at the end of Charlotte’s Web, but she also leaves a sack of her eggs behind. What will become of them? What would the character of Fern be like as a grown up? Who would move to the farm if Fern’s family were to move away?

  5. Goals for Lesson • The purpose for this exercise is to show how eBooks can be integrated into the classroom setting as an effective tool to teach new literacies. • In accordance with the Standards for each grade level, this project gives students an opportunity to practice their critical reading skills and to also sharpen their comprehension and writing skills. • Students will also be able to respectfully critique the sequels of their classmates and also solicit feedback and edit their own work. Having a concrete deadline for the completion of the sequels will help keep the students on task.

  6. Final Step of the Project Once all of the sequels have been uploaded to the eReaders, students will take turns reading pages of the sequels aloud in class. Those who would like a finished hardcopy of their book are welcome to print their sequels. They will then staple the pages together between two pieces of heavy cardstock paper and cover the spine with cloth tape. They can also design covers and illustrate their hardcopies. This will give students something tangible to take away from this fun and inspiring exercise.

  7. Using Technology to Make Reading Universally Fun
