  1. Leaving certificate business Higher Level exam (400 marks), three hours long, attempt al three sections.

  2. Section 1 (80 marks) • Ten short questions • All questions carry equal marks • Answer eight out of the ten • This section is returned with the answer book.

  3. Section 2 (80 marks) • ABQ applied Business Question • 2013 Questions are based on units 5,6,7

  4. Section 3 (240 marks) • Seven structured questions. All questions carry equal marks(60). Four questions to be answered. • Part 1 (3 questions) answer 1, based on units 1(question 1), 6(Question 2, Companies, community dev, ethics and economic variables), and 7(possibly question 3). • Part 2 (4 questions) answer 2, based on units 2 (Q4),3(Q4),4 (Q6+7),5 (Q6+7). • A fourth question is to be answered from either part 1 or 2.

  5. Most common Faults • Not given proper consideration to cues in question stem, e.g. remember to link to correct stakeholder i.e. business, government, community etc. • Not developing points adequately (S.E.E.) • Not answering enough questions, and developing enough points, e.g. 2/3 points. • If given stimulus material it must be read and if asked to apply you must be capable of finding an example in said material. • Not enough knowledge of consumer legislation

Students who do better • Section 1 answers must be concise and specific • Know all formula on syllabus • Read questions carefully twice, don’t go giving prepared answers that don’t answer what was asked • In some cases you would be advised to use 2 column layout for answering, • e.g. explain McGregor's theory Y on motivation with reference to the given text

Doing better cont. • Practice on exam questions and be familiar with paper layout • Candidates who keep up to date with topical issues do well, watch the news, read the papers! • Units 6 and 7 are very topical in the current business environment • Start each question on a new page, label all questions clearly, answer all parts of the questions. • Practice with exam timings

Doing better cont. • Answer questions using headings and paragraphs, essay style answers don’t do well as they go off the point • Concentrate on developing 4 or 5 points carefully • Know your marking scheme, www.examinations.ie • Note mark allocation and allocate time accordingly • Be careful about assuming the division of marks

  9. Doing better cont. • Be prepared to discuss, analyse and evaluate not just recall info • Use valid examples • Label all graphs/bar charts correctly and ensure they are to scale and include a title • Know the what the cues are looking for (hand-out)
