Materials-Related Facilities and Other Assets • Material processing and fabrication facilities: • Miscellaneous wood and composite machining and processing equipment (saws, planers, sanders, moulders, hot presses) • Cellulose mechanical treatment facilities for biomaterial processing (miller, homogenizer, and high-intensity ultrasonic processor) • Woody biomass chemical treatment and processing (extraction unit, pH meter, centrifuge, ovens, balances, fume hood, Viscometer) • Biofuel process (Bioflo110 fermentor, pressure reactor, calorimeter) • Material testing facilities: • Mechanical tests (Baldwin, Instron, MTS testing machine) • Physical tests (Optical microscopes, Atomic force microscopy) • Thermal tests (TA Differential Scanning Calorimeter) • Other analysis facilities: • Waters Alliance HPLC system, Contact Angle Analyzer, Pressure-Treating Cylinder, Gel Vertical electrophoretic cell, Raman System

Future Research interests in the Energy-Related Materials Area • Woody biomass to biofuel and bio-product • Coal/biomass to liquid fuels • Development of advanced biodegradable cellulosic nanocomposites for transportation, medical, and packaging applications • Characterization of properties of cellulosic nanocomposites, such as mechanical, thermal, and biodegradable properties • Fabrication and characterization of wood plastic composites using recycled plastics and Appalachian hardwood residues • Other bio-products from woody biomass, such as polymeric ultrafiltration membranes from polymers and microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose nitrate membrane
