  1. Step 3 Forgiveness

  2. Forgiveness • When God pardons sin, He absolves you from the condemnation of the law, and He removes the guilt of sin, and the sinner’s actual liability to eternal wrath on account of it. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  3. It’s Free • All sins are forgiven freely. • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9). The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  4. It’s Forever • The sinner is forever freed from the guilt and penalty of the sins. This is the peculiar prerogative of God. He can do this because He is God. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  5. We Must also Forgive • Because we want to live our lives by the same example God gives us, we must be willing to forgive others like He does. • Trying to emulate God’s characteristics can be accomplished only through grace. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  6. Forgiveness, Not Feelings • Many people are angry at someone who has hurt them. • Our nature is to want revenge! • You hurt me, so you owe me something! • Forgiveness will not come naturally. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  7. Strong Words about Forgiveness • Scripture tells us, “For if you forgive men for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions” (Matthew 6: 14-15). • Who are you holding a grudge against? You must forgive them if you want God’s forgiveness for yourself. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  8. Healing • Forgiveness is the beginning and the foundation of healing. • This is a critical step in The Cure of Souls. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  9. Forgiveness Is a Choice • Forgiveness is an act of the will. It is a choice we make, not a feeling we have. • God is serious about us forgiving others. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  10. We Are Told to Forgive • “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your transgressions” (Mark 11:25). The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  11. And, to Forgive Many Times • When Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive, Jesus answered him, “I do not say to your, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18: 21-22). The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  12. Forgiving Does Not Mean Forgetting • When you choose to forgive, you cancel the debt and no longer feel the person owes you. • You are not saying what they did was okay. • You are not saying that you will forget. • You ARE saying that you will not hold it against them. • You will not remind them of the situation. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  13. Forgiving Is Not Easy • The act of forgiveness is difficult and painful. It could take years to work through. • God can comfort you. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  14. The Act of Forgiveness • There will be times it is not best to talk face-to-face to a person who offended you. • There will also be times when you must speak directly to someone and offer forgiveness. • In some cases, it might be necessary to write a letter to someone, and send it to them. • You may also need to just go through the motions of writing a letter, but then throw the letter in the trash if it would be best that they never see it. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  15. Remember • By forgiving, you are canceling a debt someone owes you. • You are NOT saying that what they did was right, or that it was okay. • You must cancel their debt if you want to release the anger and bitterness you have against them. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  16. Complete Step 3 • Think about who it is that you need to forgive. • Pray that God will help you to forgive, and then cancel the debt they owe for hurting you. • Do you also need to speak with them? Write them a letter? Or simply forgive them in your heart and never say anything? • You might need to forgive yourself for something. • To forgive goes against our human nature. It is difficult. Work through this step again if necessary. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls

  17. The Next Step • The next step we will discuss is that of faith and what it means to be born again. • God is in control, and acknowledging His sovereignty instead of focusing on our life’s circumstances is the beginning to living a life of faith in God. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
