  1. Step 3 KWL Part 2

  2. Background Once you have found some great web sites, you are faced with deciding whatis important and helpful and whatisn’t. Search engines are powerful tools WHEN you use strategies to get the most out of them.

  3. Objective By the end of this lesson you will know: • The complete KWL strategy. • The importance of reviewing your objective (goal.) • The value of using your own words to write down what you have read (learnt.)

  4. Lesson Time to review your KWL planning sheet from Lesson 1.

  5. L- This is where you write down what you LEARNT from your research. This part is filled in with what you knew about the topic before you started to research. This is where you write down what you want to find out, these can be questions.

  6. Completing the L column is very important as this is where you put the answers to your questions, in your own words.

  7. Why use your own words? Reason 1: There isn’t enough time or space to write everything down. Besides, not everything is important. Take the MAIN idea from what you read and shorten it by putting it in your own words.

  8. Reason 2: Using someone else’s words is plagiarism. You’re smart, you don’t need to steal someone else’s words. Besides by using your own words you can make it easier for others to understand. When you need to quote someone, be sure to say who wrote it and where you got it from, by referencing it.

  9. STOP! Make sure that all the questions you asked in the W column, has the answer to it in the L column. The great thing about finishing your KWL planning sheet, is that you will know when you have found the answers to all your questions.

  10. So, take the time to really think about the answers as you fill in your KWL planning sheet. Thinking ahead, and seeing it through to the end will make your research project a success, and you will definitely learn a lot from doing this.

  11. Let’s Review Practice what you have learnt, by completing the Step 3 Activity Sheet. • Look back at your KWL planning sheet. • Look at the things you WANTED to find out, these are your questions. • Fill in the L column, with all the information you LEARNT from your research. • Use your own words, this keeps it simple and honest.
