How is it Used? • The military uses thermal energy to detect a certain someone's body temperature to secure their position. • That’s how the military can find out where a certain criminal is hiding by looking through a device and sensing their body temperature • The term UAV means an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, used for surveillance, reconnaissance, or tactical air strikes. • Doppler radar is what is used by police officer "radar guns" to determine the speed of a motor vehicle. Sort of militar-ish.

  3. How is it Used? (continued) • System or technique for detecting the position, movement, and nature of a remote object by means of radio waves reflected from its surface. • An airplane's radar is a bit like a torch that uses radio waves instead of light. The plane transmits an intermittent radar beam (so it sends a signal only part of the time) and, for the rest of the time, "listens" out for any reflections of that beam from nearby objects. • If reflections are detected, the plane knows something is nearby—and it can use the time taken for the reflections to arrive to figure out how far away it is. In other words, radar is a bit like the echolocation system that "blind" bats use to see and fly in the dark.

  4. INFARED • 12 to about 30 µm, covered by doped silicon. • Frequencies: .003 - 4 x 1014 Hz • Wavelengths: 1 mm - 750 nm • There are some radar units that operate on frequencies well below 100 megahertz (megacycles) and others that operate in the infrared range and above.

  5. Extra! • The word "radar" stands for radio detection and ranging. • Imagine an airplane flying at night through thick fog. The pilots can't see where they're going, so they use the radar to help them.
