  5. Failure • In Auster‘s works it is not just the opposite of „happy ending“ • In Moonpalace it results from the individual‘s uncertainly about the status of his own identity • Protagonists start a search for their own identity • reduce their life to the minimum • they gain new strength

Identity • Protagonist comes across a development of reducing his existence to the absolute necessary • Cuts off contact with friends and his family •  gain new strength to connect to the world again • In the End Auster manages to resolve the questions for himself •  he finally comes to accept his own life
