  1. Selected Feedback fromJanuary 2006 Retreat Randy H. Katz

  2. What is the Project Focus? • “Long Tail” of web sites and services • Small/”single developer-operator” sites with the benefit of the reliability of larger commercial sites (i.e., “Google in a Box”) • Technologies to move from rapid prototype to industrial strength/robust deployment • Develop a service taxonomy of what is needed to support such sites -- identify needs and shortfalls in existing frameworks

  3. What is the Project Focus? • Support for debugging/robust execution vs. development • Rapid development of industry standard web services frameworks -- difficult to compete with this activity; leverage it instead • Tools to support “single operator” to identify and fix problems as they arise • Distributed System Debugging: first class support in operational environment • Deterministic Group Replay/Effective logging tools • Machine learning as a leverage factor • Internet in a Box (IIAB) as a testbed/prototyping environment • Do not underestimate the timing reproducibility challenges

  4. What is the Project Focus? • Actual experience in deploying and running a service • As much to be learned in the long-tail as in the very large scale sites? • Scale-up vs. scale-out • Knowledge/Data Collection • Interview EBay, Amazon, Google, … to uncover (and codify) common problems, divergent approaches • Real-world failure cases

  5. What is the First Application? • Many suggestions! • Distributed OLTP • Utility Grid Computing • Multimedia Services/Media Hosting • Health Services, Security Services, Entertainment Services, Environmental Services • Podcast Hosting and Searching Service • …

  6. What is the Project Organization? • Difficult to see how individual projects fit into an overall project organization • Suggestion that all talks begin with an indication of where they fit within the overall project picture

  7. Retreat Format • Granlibakkan a great meeting venue! • Welcoming, open discussion environment • Wiki a big win; add presentation podcasts! • Birds of a feather (BoF) discussions over lunch, dinner worked very well • Some issues with double poster session, duplicate talks and posters • Present more concrete project plans for industrial feedback
