  1. REASONABLE FAITH

    Does God Exist?
  2. COSMOLOGICAL EVIDENCE
  3. BIBLICAL ARGUMENT For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God Hebrews 3:4
  4. KALAM ARUGMENT Premise 1: Whatever begins to exist has a cause Premise 2: The Universe began to exist Conclusion: The Universe has a cause
  5. LAW OF CAUSALITY The Law of Causality: Every material effect must have an adequate antecedent cause The Law of Causality: Relationship between an event (the cause) and a second event (the effect), where the second event is understood as a consequence of the first
  6. The Universe, and everything that has happened in it since the beginning of time, are a grand effect without a known cause. An effect without a cause? That is not the world of science; it is a world of witchcraft, of wild events and the whims of demons, a medieval world that science has tried to banish. As scientists, what are we to make of this picture? I do not know. I would only like to present the evidence for the statement that the Universe, and man himself, originated in a moment when time began (1977, p. 21). Robert Jastrow, Director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA
  7. THERMODYNAMICS 1st Law: Given a certain amount of energy in a closed system, that energy will remain constant, though it will change form Julius Robert Mayer Defined First Law
  8. THERMODYNAMICS 2nd Law: Though there is a constant amount of energy in a given system that is merely transforming into different states, that energy is becoming less usable Lord Kelvin Defined Second Law
  9. THERMODYNAMICS “A formal definition of the second law of thermodynamics is "In any closed system, a process proceeds in a direction such that the unavailable energy (the entropy) increases." In other words, in any closed system, the amount of disorder always increases with time…to one where energy is more unavailable.” John M. Cimbala Professor Penn St.
  10. CONCLUSIONS Three possible outcomes: Universe is the cause Unintelligent eternal cause Intelligent eternal cause
  11. Universe as the Cause The universe is not eternal The cause must transcend the effect Violates Law of Causality (An effect cannot also exist as the cause)
  12. Unintelligent Eternal Cause The proposed, “God Particle”
  13. CERN COLLIDER
  14. Unintelligent Eternal Cause The proposed, “God Particle” Particle does not transcend universe What caused the particle to exist?
  15. Intelligent Eternal Cause God is eternal; transcends Universe God possesses intelligence to create What caused God? No problem with Eternal Universe No problem with Eternal Particles Major problem with an Eternal God
  16. teleologicalEVIDENCE
  17. BIBLICAL ARGUMENT For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb…I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance Ps 139:13-16
  18. DARWIN’S CHALLENGE “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”
  19. IRREDCUIBLE COMPLEXITY An irreducible complex system is one that requires several closely matched parts in order to function and where removal of one of the components effectively causes the system to cease functioning.”
  20. THE CELL Highly Sophisticated Animal Cell
  21. THE CELL “The information content of a simple cell has been established as around 1012 bits, comparable to about a hundred million pages of the Encyclopedia Britannica”
  22. HUMAN DNA (DNA) is a nucleic acid —usually in the form of a double helix— that contains the genetic instructions specifying the biological development of all cellular forms of life, and many viruses.
  23. HUMAN DNA To build one protein, you typically need 1,200 to 2,000 letters or bases-which is a lot of information Stephen Meyer A Case for the Creator
  24. HUMAN DNA First, you need the right bonds between the amino acids. Second, amino acids come in right-handed and left-handed versions, and you’ve got to get only left-handed ones. Third, the amino acids must link up in a specified sequence, like letters in a sentence.
  25. HUMAN DNA Runs the odds of these things falling into place on their own and you find that the probabilities of forming a rather short functional protein at random would be one chance in…10 with 125 zeros after it! Stephen Meyer A Case for the Creator
  26. HUMAN DNA “The number of possible ways of putting nucleotides together in a chromosome is enormous. Thus a human being is an extraordinarily improbable object. . . .Most of the 102.4x109 possible sequences of nucleotides would lead to complete biological malfunction” (“Life,” Encyclopaedia Britannica (NewYork: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.), 22:967).
  27. IRREDUCIBLE COMPLEXITY The Argument Each piece within a system is necessary All pieces evolve separately Cannot function until all pieces are present Nature Selection Chooses what is already working If it is not working, it gets thrown out Thus, evolution would have thrown out a system before it could develop all the parts needed to work
  28. COUNTERPOINT The Disteleological Argument Poor design disproves an intelligent creator Panda’s thumb (Helps Panda grip bamboo) The Retina (Allows for oxygen; hard to improve) Huge Assumption Assumes all knowledge on design Negates the fact that tradeoffs are necessary Ex. Computer (Poor design v. Cost efficient)
  29. MORAL EVIDENCE
  30. BIBLICAL ARGUMENT For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves Rom 2:14
  31. RIGHT AND WRONG Why does man know right from wrong? Man is equipped with morality (Effect) A righteous God is the only adequate cause Rom 1:18-20, Immoral men are without excuse
  32. THE CONSCIENCE The laws of Chemistry and Physics cannot explain our experiences of conscience No matter how much the brain is probed, scientists cannot make a patient believe or decide Science shows a distinction between the outer and inner man…2Cor 4:16
  33. THE CONSCIENCE You can’t get something out of nothing. If the universe began with dead matter having no conscious, how then, d you get something totally different-consciousness, living, thinking, feeling, believing creatures-from materials that don’t have that? But if everything started with the mind of God, we don’t have a problem with explaining the origin of our mind”…Michael Ruse a Darwinist philosopher conceded that, “no one, certainly not the Darwinian as such, seems to have an answer to the consciousness issue. J.P. Moreland
  34. CONCLUSION Cosmological Evidence points to an Intelligent Designer as the most reasonable First Cause of the Universe Teleological Evidence points to an Intelligent Designer as the most reasonable First Cause of Irreducibly Complex Systems Moral Evidence points to an Intelligent Designer as the most reasonable First Cause for morality and Consciousness
  35. WHAT WILL YOU BELIEVE? In a 1 and 80 million trillion trilliontrilliontrilliontrillion chance of getting the right hand
  36. WHAT WILL YOU BELIEVE? In a 100% chance of getting what you want in a computer customized to fit your specific needs
  37. THE TRUTH EVERYTHING EITHER HAPPENED BY CHANCE OR ON PURPOSE!!!
  38. BIBLICAL ARGUMENT The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good. Ps 14:1
