  1. Technology Update Annual Member Meeting September 16, 2003 London 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  2. Status • Operations • Availability (1/03 – 8/03): 97.6% 1.7% downtime due to planned upgrades and only effected deposits Unplanned downtime mostly due to power failures • Performance 1 successful query = avg. response time is 0.656 seconds 1 failed query = avg. response time is 1.2 seconds Deposit performance depends on number of jobs in the Q (4 simultaneously) (50% < 5min) (12%< 1hr) (16% < 6hr) (7%< 12hr) (10% < 24hr) (5% > 24hr) • Resource loading System is approximately 60% utilized (main driver is the database machine) Heavy during 8AM- 8PM EST weekdays Weekend loading is < 10% Deposit processing accounts for ~ 5% of the load 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  3. Status • Improvements • Hardware • 3 new Dell servers to run Atypon’s Java code • improved network configuration (introduced http://doi.crossref.org) • additional storage • System Software Completed: DOI Overwrite, XML queries, OpenURL resolver, tracking ID Return of multiple hits Forward matching (query match alerts) Failed query reports, DOI history report Remaining: Real time query interface, handle synchronization • Services • Retrieve XML for a given DOIs • Conflict summary reports • DOI break down by journal title • Free guest query • Web based XML parser (for checking against the schema) 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  4. Plans • Hardware • Upgrade database server (retire older machines / reduce data-center footprint) • Increase redundancy (power and network connectivity) • Add load balancer to the Web front end • System Software • Forward linking • Multiple resolution - address metadata and infrastructure issues • (a much broader issue than the impacts on CrossRef) • Planning other 2004 changes • (resiliency, status monitoring, Web service interface …) • Services • Offer Web seminars on specific technical topics • Improve ‘Browsable’ journal feature • (add more accurate holdings data, merge MARC record information) 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  5. Forward Matching • Reduce the need for members to re-query CrossRef • Before forward matching each member had to re-submit failed queries on a periodic basis • Results in a higher than necessary query load on the system • Reduces the overall matching rates • Forward matching stores failed queries for subsequent evaluation (the CrossRef system will do the re-querying) • Combines similar failed queries from all users into one query • Only re-runs a query when a deposit triggers the chance for a match • (based on journal title) • Re-query load can be scheduled more efficiently • Members will receive ‘alerts’ (via email) when a DOI is found 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  6. Failed Query Report • In August out of 5,344,517 queries, matched 1,058,425 (20%) • In August: top 10 users not finding journal titles/ISSNs 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London

  13. Parameter Passing Parameter passing (a DOI feature) • Allows the link source to pass information through the DOI resolver to the link target (very cool!) • Based on OpenURL 1.0 Source HTTP://dx.doi.org/10.1038/suffix?from=EBSCO HTTP://dx.doi.org/10.1038/suffix?rfr_dat=cr_pub=EBSCO HTTP://www.nature.com/articles?id=123 With Parameter Passing and a standard vocabulary With Parameter Passing With Out Parameter Passing Registered URL Target HTTP://www.nature.com/articles?id=123 HTTP://www.nature.com/articles?rft_dat=id=123&from=EBSCO HTTP://www.nature.com/articles?rft_dat=id=123&rfr_dat=cr_pub=EBSCO 2003 CrossRef Annual Member Meeting London
