  1. America’s road to war Ch 23 section 2

  2. What is Neutrality? • What happens when a car is in N (or neutral)????

  3. NOTHING! • That’s kinda how we would describe the U.S. involvement in the early parts of WWI. Basically we were neutral. • President Wilson declared the U.S. neutral. • In 1914- Most of Americans were immigrants and decided to “take sides” this caused America to start forming allies with certain Ethnic Groups.

  4. Propaganda • This is information designed to influence opinion. • Germans were called “Huns” and described them as savage barbarians. • America gets involved- The British- seized many items on Navy ships thinking they were going to Germany to help them. The U.S. did not particular appreciate this…

  5. Britain stops the trading between the Germans and the U.S. but we continue to trade with Britain. • Britain and France borrowed billions of dollars from American banks. • An economic boom in America caused the Germans to assume that “we the U.S.” were helping Britain and that we were no longer “neutral”

  6. Submarine Warfare • The Germans announced that any boats would be destroyed by using submarines. • The U.S. warned that any lost American lives would result in severe consequences- but the Germans did not heaed the United States warning.

  7. Lusitania • The British ship sank in about 15 minutes. • American passengers were on board- 1,000 people lost their lives. • It was on……. Now……

  8. Neutral??? Not!!! • The U.S. started building up it’s military. Many American’s were still against the war. • 1917- Wilson asked congress for permission to enter the war. • Congress later agreed and the Selective Service Act established a military draft.

  9. What is the draft? • Men age 21-30 registered by the millions. • 3 million of the 24 million people who registered went to war by the draft. • This means that you were called to war- you didn’t volunteer. Many Americans supported so the “draft” wasn’t controversial

  10. Homework • Reread ch 23 sections 1 & 2
