Read Aloud Program Purpose • To promote a love of reading and of books; • to instill and nurture life long reading habits in Indiana students
Why Read Aloud Children who are read to • read more on their own • show more literacy development • Show superior gains in reading comprehension Research from The Power of Reading by Stephen D. Krashen, Heinemann, 2004.
Reading Aloud • Provides models of language in use • Builds interest in language • Increases awareness of words • Builds vocabulary • Aids in the development of new insights and understandings • Aids in overall comprehension • Creates a risk free zone in which all listeners have equal access to knowledge
Reading Aloud, cont. • Has the potential to spark a love of reading • Can have a positive influence on reading attitudes • Provides models of fluent reading • Can model how readers think in the process of reading • Shows the range of topics, styles, and genres available in written language • Helps develop tastes in reading and in selecting literature • Improves listening skills
Reading Aloud, cont. • Broadens a listener’s worldview • Makes the rhythms of written language familiar • Extends and layers on existing knowledge • Demonstrates the nature and purpose of reading • Aids in the development of imagery • Offers multiple perspectives
