  3. Who We Are • We are a COE Robotics Student Organization • We’re not just for seniors or engineers! • Participate and support a number of STEM-based programs • FIRST • BEST • GEAR • Shake Hands with Your Future • Science, It’s A Girl Thing

  4. Who We Are • We raise awareness for STEM programs and activities in the community • We work together as partners to inform and inspire youth about STEM career possibilities • We work closely with K-12 students to establish a strong student/mentor relationship

  5. Programs We Sponsor • BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) • Middle and High School Students • Free for Participating Schools • Build a Robot in Six Weeks • Limited Materials • National Competition • Takes place during the Fall Semester

  6. West Texas BEST • Regional Hub Host • Preparation During the Summer • Returnable Kits • Non-returnable Kits • Build game field • Official Events • Kickoff – 9/17 • Mall Day – 10/22 • Game Day – 11/5

Programs We Sponsor • FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) • International robotics competition with over 50 participating countries • Includes K-12 grade students • Sponsored by Professional Engineering Companies around the world • Takes place during the Spring Semester

  8. FIRST Robotics Competition • Mentor High School Students • “Pre-Build Season” – NOW • “Build Season” Jan 4 – Feb 15 • Robot Ship Date Feb 21 @ 10:00 am (?) • Competitions (Tentative)

FIRST Robotic Competition • Program centered around an intense 6 – week period called “The Build Season” • At kick-off Jan 7, 2012, the “game” or challenge for this year’s build season will be revealed • 6 weeks to design, fabricate, program and test a robot • Game changes every year; no components, software, or custom parts may be reused

What you Should Expect • The team is managed and run entirely by college students • Participating is a serious commitment • We have a budget of ̴$55,000 a year • Mentors come from all departments and have different experience levels and skills • Everyone will get the chance to contribute and learn • This can be the hardest fun you’ve ever had • You will get out what you put in

  13. What you Should Expect • Build professional-grade robots • 20+ hours a week, even 40+ during build season • Learn things you can’t learn in class • The most intense engineering experience • Make a lot of quality friends • Travel

  14. Team Etiquette • Things that will not be tolerated: • Immature/inappropriate behavior • Poor role modeling • Disregard for your or other’s safety • Lack of commitment • Poor team players

Team Etiquette • Things that will not be tolerated: • Subversion, leadership reserves the right to make critical team decisions • Do not give conflicting information to the team, always defer important questions to the team leadership • Treat all mentors and students with respect. Period. • “Don’t fight in front of the students”

  16. Team Etiquette • Things that will not be tolerated: • Violence • Unreasonable complaints • Excessive absences and/or tardiness • Lack of responsibility • Lack of motivation

  18. Admission Process • Sign-up for a position of interest • We’ll contact you for a group interview • If necessary, we’ll contact you for individual interview • We’ll notify selected candidates via email

  19. Membership Requirements • NO prior experience • Positive attitude • Willingness to learn new things • Positive mentor to students

  20. Membership Requirements • Read and agree to abide by the Team Handbook • Signed Mentor Contract • Meet all safety requirements • Maintain a safe, constructive presence • Adherence to appropriate behavior and knowledge of intolerable actions • $100 Fee*
