  3. Senior School • Graduate from Lesmurdie SHS • Achieve Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) - WACE Tracking - Good Standing • Prepared for transition to work, training or further education - Appropriate Senior School courses - Vocational programs 3

Graduation Achievement of a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) is controlled by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) who: Set graduation standards; Determine the final graduation status of all students in Western Australia; and Award the WACE to each eligible student. 4

  5. WACE Course Structure Each course is made up three stages Eligible for University Entrance with Bonus Points Stage Three Eligible for University Entrance Stage Two Stage One 5

  6. WACE Courses Stage One Courses • Can be studied in either Year 11 or 12 • Not externally assessed in WACE Examinations • Cannot be used for ‘front door’ University entrance • Grades contribute to TAFE/ private training provider entry 6

  7. WACE Courses Stage Two Courses • Typically studied in Year 11 • Externally assessed in WACE Examinations • Can be used for ‘front door’ University entrance as part of an ATAR • Grades contribute to TAFE/ private training provider entry 7

  8. WACE Courses Stage Three Courses • Typically studied in Year 12 • Externally assessed in WACE Examinations • Recommended for University entrance as part of an ATAR • Grades contribute to TAFE/ private training provider entry 8

WACE Requirements • 10 courses across senior secondary years • up to 5 course equivalents can come from VET • 2 courses from a WACE English course • At least one List A and List B completed in Year 12 • Average of C grade • across best 8 courses; 4 from Year 12 • VET can reduce this on a sliding scale • Minimum of 5 courses; 2 from year 12 • English language competence 9

  10. WACE Requirements Achieve English Language Competence • Achieve a ‘C’ Grade or better in an English course • School will compare a selection of student work with work samples provided by SCSA (If a ‘C’ grade is not achieved) 10

  13. Why a Good Standing Policy? • On track to achieve a WACE • Encourage consistent performance • Recognise the efforts of students who are both consistently performing and excelling • Support students who have not yet met the required standard 13

Good Standing Policy Students who are deemed to have maintained Good Standing in a semester will have achieved the following levels of performance in relation to the Senior School standards (Section 2): • Commitment Standard – Obtain at least 60% combined Consistently and Often attributes on Semester report. • Academic Standard – Minimum Course average 3.00 in a Semester (average calculated using A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1). • VET Standard (where a student has enrolled in a VET Certificate)– Semester One: Achieved 80% of Semester One Units. Semester Two: Completion of full VET Certificate. • Attendance Standard – 90% attendance or better in all six courses studied. • Conduct Standard – Maintain appropriate conduct across the school

Good Standing Policy Advanced Standing (Academic) Students are deemed to have excelled in relation to all of the academic standards (Section 2) when they have achieved the following levels of performance in a semester: • Commitment Standard – Obtain at least 60% combined Consistently and Often attributes on Semester report. • Academic Standard – Minimum Course average 4.50 in a Semester (average calculated using A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1). • VET Standard (where a student has enrolled in a VET Certificate)– Semester One: Achieved 90% of Semester One Units. Semester Two: Completion of full VET Certificate. • Attendance Standard – 95% attendance or better in all courses studied. • Conduct Standard – Maintain appropriate conduct across the school.

Good Standing Policy Advanced Standing (Commitment) Students are deemed to have excelled in relation to the commitment standard (Section 2) when they have achieved the following levels of performance in a semester: • Commitment Standard – Obtain at least 95% Consistently attributes, with no sometimes or seldom attributes on Semester report. • Academic Standard – Minimum Course average 3.00 in a Semester (average calculated using A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1). • VET Standard (where a student has enrolled in a VET Certificate)– Semester One: Achieved 80% of Semester One Units. Semester Two: Completion of full VET Certificate. • Attendance Standard – 95% attendance or better in all six courses studied. • Conduct Standard – Maintain appropriate conduct across the school

Good Standing Policy Conditional Standing Students are deemed to have performed below an acceptable level in relation to the standards (Section 2) when they have exhibited one or more of the following levels of performance in a semester: • Commitment Standard – Obtain less than 60% combined Consistently and Often attributes on Semester report. • Academic Standard – Minimum Course average below 3.00 in a Semester (average calculated using A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1). • VET Standard (where a student has enrolled in a VET Certificate)– Semester One: Achieved less than 80% of Semester One Units. Semester Two: Incompletion of VET Certificate. • Attendance Standard – below 90% attendance in any course studied within a semester. • Conduct Standard – Not maintaining appropriate conduct across the school.

  18. Conditional Standing Providing support • Monitoring by Senior School Manager and Senior School Coordinator • Early intervention/notification process for teachers of conditional students 18

  19. Assessment • All students at are provided with: • A course outline • SCSA Syllabus • Assessment Schedule, including: • Assessment type and area of the course • Timing of all assessments (week) • Weighting of each assessment 19

  20. Assessment Policy General Course Penalties A 10% per day reduction of the student’s awarded mark will occur up to three school days, after which no marks will be awarded. Work must still be submitted after three school days have passed at which point a zero mark will be awarded. Failure to submit the assessment will impact significantly on the satisfactory completion of the course.

  21. Assessment Policy Note- All or part of a weekend is considered one day late. Repeated Absence Related to Assessment Where a teacher considers that repeated absences have affected the completion or timely submission of assessment tasks, one or more of the following actions may be taken: penalties for lateness may be applied

Assessment Policy While family time is very valuable, it is important to stress that taking children out of school for family holidays reduces the amount of time available for learning and is detrimental to their education. Where a student will be absent from scheduled assessments due to family holiday: In line with Department of Education guidelines parents are required to seek Principal authorisation at least two weeks prior to holiday departure

Assessment Policy The student must negotiate to complete and submit the assessment prior to holiday departure or email the assessment to the teacher by the due date Where the assessment is an invigilated task (conducted in class) the student must negotiate an alternate date within 5 school days prior to date of the scheduled assessment Assessments cannot be rescheduled upon return

  24. Assessment Policy Where an assessment is unable to be undertaken or submitted by the due date the student may be allocated ‘0’ Decisions to accommodate alternate arrangements will be determined on an individual basis by the Course teacher and Deputy Principal Senior School.

  25. Parent Support In discussions with you son/daughter • Refer to Assessment schedules about their assessment programs and the timing of various assessments • Refer to the Good Standing policy • Refer to the Assessment policy 25

  26. Parent Support Promote • Organisation • Ongoing discussions between your child and each of their teachers • Discussions between your son/daughter and the Senior School Manager or Senior School Coordinator as needed 26

  27. Parent Support Contact • Teachers – regarding your son/daughter’s progress • Senior School Manager – assistance with education or post-school destinations • Senior School Coordinator – assistance with concerns at home, with peers, coping at school 27
