  3. Domesday Book • Wanted to know more about England • Used the info to create a central tax system for England

  4. Royal Marriage • English ruler Henry marries Eleanor of Aquitaine • Together they ruled all of England and half of France

  5. Magna Carta • 1215 C.E. • Nobles become worried that the King has too much power • Make King John sign the Magna Carta • Identifies the power of the people • Also makes King meet with citizens, establish a parliament

  6. Other Monarchies • France • Spain and Portugal • Reconquista – An effort to restore Christianity on the Iberian Penisula • Moors / Muslims not driven out until 1492

  7. Late Middle Ages • Religion at the center yet again • Heresy • Inquisitions • Trials to see if someone was against the church • Friars

  8. 100 Years War • Argument over who is the heir to French throne in 1328 • Two sides claiming the throne go to war in 1337 • English are successful early • Then the French get inspiration

  9. Joan of Arc • Claimed the saints told her to lead the troops into battle • Captured by English • Tried for heresy • Convicted • Executed or burned at the stake

  10. French Rally • King Louis VII • French kick the English out by 1453

  11. Black Death • 1347-1351 • Two types • Bubonic Plague • Pneumonic Plague • Estimated 25 million deaths • Helped to end manorial systems
