  2. Pattern L: SV;SV (I;I) • V = verb: action verb or linking verb • S = subject: person or thing • ; = semicolon: joins independent clauses

  3. Pattern L: SV;SV (I;I) Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Find the verbs. -Underline the complete verb twice in each part Step 3: Ask “who or what is (insert verb)?” Step 4: If you have an SV on both sides of the “;,” you have Pattern L: SV;SV

  4. Pattern L Example Mr. Brush enjoys painting; Ms. Clay thoroughly dislikes it. Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrases. NONE Step 2: Find the action. ENJOYS/DISLIKES(verb) -Underline the verb twice. Step 3: Who or what “enjoys/dislikes” ? MR. BRUSH/MS. CLAY(subject) -Underline the subject once. Step 4: Does the “;” have a SV on both sides of it? YES PATTERN L

  5. Pattern M: SV; conjunctive adverb, SV • V = verb: action verb or linking verb • S = subject: person or thing • Conjunctive Adverb = shows results, contrast, time, or additional information • ; = semicolon: joins independent clauses

  6. Common Conjunctive Adverbs therefore consequently as a result thus accordingly however nevertheless on the contrary on the other hand moreover furthermore in addition meanwhile at any rate after all

  7. Pattern M: SV; Conjunctive Adverb, SV Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Find the verbs. -Underline the complete verb twice in each part Step 3: Ask “who or what is (insert verb)?” -Underline the subject once in each part Step 4: Look for conjunctive adverbs. -If you have an SV followed by a “;” and conjunctive adverb, and SV, you have pattern M.

  8. Pattern M Example The application was lost in the mail; consequently, the man was never granted an interview with the company. Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrases. IN THE MAIL/WITH THE COMPANY(IN/WITH= preposition) Step 2: Find the action. WAS LOST/WAS GRANTED(verb) -Underline the verb twice. Step 3: Who or what “was lost/was granted” ? APPLICATION/MAN(subject) -Underline the subject once. Step 4: Is an SV followed by a “;” and conjunctive adverb followed by a comma and another SV? YES PATTERN M

  9. Pattern N: Items in a Series A,B,C A and B and C A or B or C With these patterns, a series of similar items such as nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc. are joined with EITHER commas or conjunctions -Do NOT use commas and conjunctions together -Structures must be PARALLEL

  10. Pattern N Example New tires, new brakes, new shock absorbers– I just spent eight hundred dollars! Parallelism: new tires, new brakes, new shock absorbers Notice the series is just separated by commas.

  11. Pattern N Example Chips and salsa and guacamole sound good. Notice the series is just separated by conjunctions.

  12. Pattern N Example Dancing or eating or socializing will occur during the reception. Notice the series is just separated by conjunctions.

  13. Practice • Copy the following sentences. Identify the pattern it follows and correct any errors within them. • The game ran late, I walked home. • My library books are overdue; therefore I will have to pay a fine. • Singing, dancing, to run are her favorite hobbies. • To go, and to look, and to conquer was Caesar’s motto.
