  2. S V DO • V = verb: action in the sentence • S = subject: noun or pronoun performing the action • DO = direct object: comes after an action verb and answers the question “what?”

  3. S V DO Step 1: Cross out any prepositional phrases. Step 2: Find the verb. -Is the verb a linking verb or action verb? -If the verb is a linking verb, you cannot have a direct object. Step 3: Ask “who or what is (insert verb)?” -The answer to this question is the subject. Step 4: Say “(insert subject) (insert verb) what?” -The answer is the direct object

  4. S V DO Example At night, the dog chewed her toy. Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrases. AT NIGHT (at = preposition) Step 2: Find the action. CHEWED (verb) -Is “chewed” a linking verb? NO Step 3: Who or what chewed? DOG (subject) Step 4: Dog chewed what? TOY (direct object)

  5. S V IO DO • IO =indirect object: must be a noun or pronoun -You cannot have an indirect object without a direct object Follow steps 1-4 from previous pattern Step 5: After you find the DO, ask “to whom?” -The answer is the indirect object

  6. S V IO DO Example Sally gave Mike the answers to the test. Step 1: Cross out prepositional phrase. TO THE TEST (to = preposition) Step 2: Find the action: GAVE (verb) -Is “gave” a linking verb? NO Step 3: Who or what gave? SALLY (noun) Step 4: Sally gave what? ANSWERS (direct object) Step 5: Sally gave answers to whom? MIKE (indirect object)

  7. Practice • Copy the following sentences. Cross out the prepositional phrases, label the S, V, IO, and DO as appropriate. • 1. Mary gave Sarah a pair of boots. • 2. Mike offered Steven his watch. • 3. Three groups of people arrived at the bus on the same day.
