  1. How Many Veins Are in Human Body? What do you know about your body’s blood vessels? Do you know the difference between veins and arteries? Are you aware of the common conditions that can affect your blood vessels? And do you know how many veins the human body has? (That last one is a trick question, as you’ll see.) If you have questions about your body’s circulatory system, read on. We’ve got the scoop on how your body’s blood vessels work, the health conditions associated with them, and how you can help keep yours healthy.

  2. A Look at Your Body’s Blood Vessels Your blood vessels make up your body’s vascular system. This system includes three types of blood vessels: • Arteries, which carry blood that’s rich in oxygen from your heart to your body’s organs and tissues. • Veins, which carry blood and waste products back to your heart, and have one-way valves to keep blood flowing up toward your heart. • Capillaries, which are tiny blood vessels that connect small arteries and small veins. It’s nearly impossible to count the actual number of veins, arteries, and capillaries in the human body because of their size. Some capillaries are just one-third as wide as a human hair! But if you removed all the blood vessels from an adult’s body and laid them out, they would stretch nearly 100,000 miles.

  3. The Role of Blood Vessels Our circulatory system, which made up of blood vessels like arteries and veins, is responsible for circulating blood through the body. Blood carries vital nutrients and oxygen that help keeps our organs functioning properly and feeds our muscles and brain. An interesting yet memorable analogy is to think of the human body like a car. The heart is the engine, the blood is the oil, and the veins and vessels are the pipes, hoses, tubes, and wires. Similar to the way a car cannot function without oil, our bodies cannot live without blood. Most people never stop to think about their veins and blood vessels, unless something is wrong. This is why it’s so important to be aware of whats going on with your body and to seek medical attention any time you feel something is not normal. Since vein and vascular conditions can be very dangerous, you should not avoid or delay getting advice from medical professional about what you’re experiencing.

  4. What Do Blood Vessels Look Like? The three types of blood vessels not only have different functions, they also appear in different areas of the body and are made of different elements. For example, a vein is made up of 3 layers. The outermost layer of a vein is made of connective tissue and the inner layers consist of smooth muscle-like fibers. The layer on the inside of a vein is where the blood travels through, also known as the lumen. Capillaries, on the other hand, are very small, nearly the size of a human hair. These blood vessels are so small that blood has to travel cell-by-cell.
